Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team ended its season with an 88-70 loss to Pine Manor in the semifinals of the American Collegiate Athletic Association tournament last night. The Lions and the Gators battled toe-to-toe through three quarters. Pine Manor’s pressure finally wore Finlandia down, as they outscored the Lions 29-17 in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Pine Manor will face Valley Forge for the inaugural ACAA title today. The Lions finish with a record of 5-21.
The Finlandia softball season began on a high note yesterday, as the Lions swept both of their games on the opening day of the Dome Classic in Marquette. Finlandia started the day with an 8-0 shutout of Northland College. Kassandra Avila gave up just two hits, and struck out six. Cassandra Lopez had two hits, scored twice, and drove in three runs. The Lions then came from behind to defeat Edgewood College 12-11 in eight innings. FinnU forced the extra frame by scoring four runs in the seventh. Emily Nguyen’s bases-loaded double was the big blow in the inning, and she scored the tying run on a single by Avila. After giving the Eagles a run in the top of the eighth, singles by Harlie Caster and Nguyen brought home the tying and winning runs. The Lions continue play at the Dome Classic today, with games against Ripon College at 4:00, and Wisconsin-Superior at 6:00.
MTU/NMU
The MTU hockey team closed its regular season with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Northern Michigan University last night. After spotting the 16th-ranked Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Huskies got goals from Brent Baltus, Jake Lucchini and Justin Misiak in the second period, and hung on through a scoreless third stanza to earn the victory.
Tech is seeded fifth in the upcoming Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament, and will open at Bemidji State Friday night. NMU is seeded second, and will host Alabama-Huntsville in the quarterfinals beginning Friday.
In the other WCHA quarterfinals, top seed Minnesota State will entertain Alaska, and third-seed Bowling Green will welcome Ferris State.
The MTU women’s basketball team capped off a championship season with a 60-44 victory over Davenport University yesterday. Tech took control early. Brenna Heise led a balanced attack with 12 points, and passed the 1,000 point mark for her career. The Huskies finish the regular season with a record of 23-4 (17-3 in the GLIAC), and are the Great Lakes Intercollegiate North Division champions. They are seeded second in the GLIAC tournament, and will host Ferris State in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 5:30.
The Tech men’s team closed its regular season with a 101-99 overtime loss to Davenport. It was the fourth-straight overtime game for the Huskies, which ties an NCAA record. Kyle Monroe scored 38 points, and tied Ali Haidar in the MTU record books for the most points in a single season, with 743. With a record of 14-13 (11-9 GLIAC), Tech is seeded sixth in the GLIAC tournament, and will play at third-seeded Wayne State Wednesday at 7:30.
Former Houghton Gremlin Sydney Dillinger sank a free throw with two seconds remaining, and lifted the Northern Michigan University women’s hoops team to a 67-66 victory over Wayne State yesterday. The Wildcats are seeded sixth in the GLIAC tournament, and will begin play Wednesday at Grand Valley State.
The NMU men’s team dropped a 71-70 heartbreaker to Wayne State yesterday. Northern is seeded fifth in the GLIAC tourney, and will play at Ashland Wednesday night.

The Calumet Wolverines lost 4-3 to the Fond du Lac Bears last night.

The Detroit Red Wings broke their three-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes last night. Danny DeKeyers, Henrik Zetterberg and Trevor Daley scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 28 saves to earn the win. The Wings visit the New York Rangers tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Detroit Tigers edged the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Jordan Zimmermann gave up two hits over two scoreless innings. Nicholas Castellanos got Detroit off to a quick start with a three-run triple in the first inning. The Tigers split their squad for games against the Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates this afternoon. The Milwaukee Brewers dropped a 6-5 decision to the Los Angeles Angels yesterday. Chase Anderson started the game, and gave up two runs in one inning of work. Kyle Wren had three hits. The Brewers face the Arizona Diamondbacks today.
