MTU Women's Comeback Falls Short, Men Also Fall – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey Saturday, Houghton and Escanaba skated to a 3-3 tie. The Gremlins came out flat, and were outshot 24-4 over the first two periods, although the score was tied at two. Reid Pietila scored the game’s first goal. After the Eskymos scored twice early in the second stanza, Jacob Kruse tied it up with a power play tally. In the third period, Esky scored again, but Kruse’s second goal of the afternoon retied the contest.

On Friday night…
– Cory Tourtillott’s power play goal in the first period was the only score of the game, as Hancock edged Houghton 1-0 in the annual Wing Ding game.
– L’Anse defeated Ashwaubenon 5-1. Kyle Lake had a hat trick and an assist for the Purple Hornets.

In boys high school basketball action Friday night…
– Houghton defeated Hancock 45-37 in the annual Wing Ding game. The victory clinched the WestPAC title for the Gremlins.
– Calumet defeated West Iron County 57-48.
– Unbeaten Lake Linden-Hubbell crushed L’Anse 78-24. Arthur Lyons scored 31 points for the Lakes.
– Chassell outscored Jeffers 72-57. Hunter Rautiola scored 27 for the Panthers.
– Baraga shut down Republic-Michigamme 38-19. Brendan Varline scored 20 for the Vikings.
– The Ontonagon at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City game was postponed because of the weather. No make-up date has been provided.

MTU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team trailed by 16 after three quarters, mounted a furious comeback, but fell 74-73 in overtime to Saginaw Valley State Saturday. Danielle Blake’s three-pointer at the end of regulation forced the extra period. Blake scored a season-best 30 points – 24 after halftime. The Huskies took their final lead when Lindsay Winter rained a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining in OT, but the Cardinals’ Danielle Carriere scored with two seconds remaining to take the game, and climb into a tie with Tech for a share of first place in the GLIAC North.

The Tech men’s team lost to the Cardinals 80-72. The game was tight until the final four minutes, when the Cardinals pulled away. Kyle Monroe led the Huskies with 18 points.

The Michigan Tech hockey team had the weekend off.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit, and defeated Ferris State University 3-2 Saturday evening. The Wildcats lost 5-1 at Ferris Friday night.

Tess Weatherly’s layup with six seconds remaining lifted the Northern Michigan women’s basketball team to a 58-57 come-from-behind win over Hillsdale Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats men’s team fell to the Chargers 85-70.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s basketball team earned its second victory of the weekend by beating Minnesota-Morris 73-68 at the Paavo Nurmi Center. The Lions trailed by eight early in the second half, but took the lead for good when Marcus Geralds stole the ball and converted a fast-break layup with seven minutes to go. The Lions sank 11 free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Jordan LaPlant led Finlandia with 22 points. On Friday, the Lions pulled out an 81-78 victory over Crown College.

The Finlandia women’s team got off to a slow start, and lost to Minnesota-Morris 83-70 on Saturday. Brooke Pasanen led the Lions with 16 points. On Friday, Finlandia opened a big early lead, but went cold in the second half, and dropped a 65-63 heartbreaker to Crown College.

Wirick

The Finlandia men’s hockey team fell 7-1 at Lake Forest College Saturday. The Lions  lost 6-2 to Lake Forest Friday night. Cam Wirick scored for the Lions in each game.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team suffered a 5-0 shutout at St. Norbert College Saturday, after falling 6-2 to the Green Knights Friday night. Former Keweenaw Storm player Jessica Schlaff scored a goal in each game for St. Norbert.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Mosinee Papermakers 8-2 Saturday evening. On Friday, the Calumet Wolverines couldn’t overcome an early 3-0 deficit, and fell to the Papermakers 7-4.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Boston Bruins this afternoon. Face-off is at 3:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
