In high school hockey Saturday…

In boys basketball Saturday, Houghton fell to Escanaba 62-46.
MTU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team recovered from a slow start, and defeated Findlay 61-47 Saturday. The Huskies dropped behind by seven in the second quarter, but came back to earn a three-point halftime lead, and kept the pressure on the Oilers through the second half. Morgan Anderson led Tech with 16 points.
The MTU men’s team dropped a 72-70 heartbreaker to Findlay on Saturday. The game was nip-and-tuck until Huskies opened up an eight-point lead midway through the second half. The Oilers worked their way back, though, and the score was tied 70-70 heading into the final minute. Findlay’s Tyler Stern-Tucker found his way in for layup in the closing seconds. Tech’s three-point attempt to win the game at the buzzer went awry. Tommy Lucca led the Huskies with 19 points.
The MTU hockey team was off this weekend.
The Michigan Tech men’s and women’s Nordic Ski teams continue competition at the Central Super NCAA/JNQ Series races at the Tech Trails today. Tom Bye powered the men’s team with a fourth place finish in the A final of the classic sprint. On the women’s side, Lisa Koenig and Amanda Kautzer reached the semifinals. Northern Michigan University dominated the Masters Division, placing four men and five women in the finals. Several members of the Copper Country Ski Tigers competed in the junior divisions. NMU
The NMU women’s basketball team held Hillsdale to just nine points in the first half, and cruised past the Chargers 57-39 on Saturday. The Wildcat men’s team lost a tight 71-65 match to the Chargers.
The NMU hockey team had the weekend off.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University basketball games against North Central University were snowed out Saturday. The Finlandia University women’s basketball team lost to the University of Northwestern 73-50 Friday night. The men’s team also fell to Northwestern 78-70.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 4-2 at St. Catherine University Friday night. The men’s team had the weekend off.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines lost 3-2 to the Mosinee Papermakers Saturday night. The Wolverines dropped an 8-3 decision to the Papermakers Friday night.
The Portage Lake Pioneers lost 6-3 to the Bears at Fond du Lac Saturday night.
NBA
A tired Detroit Pistons team took an early lead, but then lost to the Indiana Pacers 105-90 Saturday night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led the Pistons with 20 points. Detroit played without Jon Leuer, who was out with back spasms. After losing three of their last four contests, players called a meeting after the game to discuss things. The Pistons play at Chicago tomorrow night.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings snapped out of their scoring slump, and defeated the Anaheim Ducks 6-4 Saturday night. Tomas Tatar led the way with his first NHL hat trick. Petr Mrazek stopped 17 shots in net. The Wings skate at Carolina tomorrow night.
NFL
In the NFL, the Miami Dolphins defeated the New York Jets 34-13 Saturday night.
Today, the Detroit Lions visit the New York Giants for a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. Center Travis Swanson will miss the game, as he continues to recover from a concussion. Running back Theo Riddick is listed as “doubtful.” Quarterback Matthew Stafford is expected to play, despite his dislocated finger. See the full report here.
The Green Bay Packers face the Chicago Bears in a 1:00 contest. The Packers will play without linebacker Nick Perry and running back James Starks. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers did not practice this week, but is expected to play. See the full injury list here.
The Packers brought in some insurance at quarterback by promoting Joe Callahan from the practice squad. Linebacker Carl Bradford was released to make room.
