MTU Women Fall in OT; Houghton Hockey Advances – Wednesday Sorts Wrap

Houghton-Gremlins-LogoJacob Kruse scored two goals in the third period, as Houghton pulled away to a 5-3 victory over Calumet in the opening game of the regional hockey tournament last night. The Copper Kings drew first blood with a Rory Anderson goal in the first period. The Gremlins tied the contest late in the first, and took the lead for good by scoring the only goal of the second period. Calumet outshot Houghton 18-15. Houghton  will face L’Anse tomorrow evening at 6:00. Jeffers will take on Hancock at 8:00. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

– Hancock got past L’Anse 43-37.

In girls tournament basketball play tonight…

– In Class C, Calumet and L’Anse will meet for the district title tonight at 7:00 at Calumet.
– In Class B, Houghton begins district play at home against Gladstone. Hear that game on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. Kingsford will face Escanaba tonight in the other district semifinal.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team’s season ended last night with a 65-63 overtime loss to Grand Valley State in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC tournament. Janae Langs’ three-pointer with three seconds remaining was the game-winning shot. The Huskies had opened an eight-point lead in the third period, only to have the Lakers run off 15 straight points. Tech trailed by a point with five seconds remaining in regulation, but Danielle Blake was fouled, and sank one of her two free throws to force the extra period. Kylie Moxley and MacKenzie Perttu led MTU with 18 points each. It was the first home loss of the season for the Huskies.

NMU
The NMU women’s basketball team was eliminated 68-54 by top-seeded Ashland in the GLIAC tourney quarterfinals.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team is in Clermont, Florida, for their annual early-spring trip. Yesterday, the Lions lost 20-5 to Immaculata University, and 12-1 to York College of Pennsylvania. Finlandia will face Hanover College this morning at 9:00, and Saint Vincent College at 11:00.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will host the Chicago Blackhawks tonight. We’ll join the game after Houghton girls basketball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons play at San Antonio tonight.

The Detroit Tigers opened their Grapefruit League schedule with a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday. Victor Martinez homered for Detroit. Starter Matt Boyd gave up a run on three hits over two innings. The Tigers will split their squad for games against the Yankees and Pirates today.

The Milwaukee Brewers will open their spring schedule with an exhibition against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee today.

The Green Bay PAckers have signed kicker Mason Crosby to a new four-year contract.

This year’s inductees into the Michigan Sport Hall of Fame have been announced. They include former Red Wings Brendan Shanahan and Chris Osgood, former Pistons John Long and Ben Wallace, and longtime New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter, who is a Michigan native.
