MLB – Tigers Win in 10th
Rajai Davis’ triple in the 10th inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox last night. The game was nearly a no-hitter. Daniel Norris pitched five perfect innings. He was lifted because of a strict pitch count after his recent return from the disabled list. Buck Farmer, Ian Krol and Drew VerHagen each added a hitless inning. With a 1-0 lead in the ninth, Neftali Feliz gave up the tying run. Blaine Hardy pitched a perfect 10th to get the win. Game details are here.
The Tigers wrap up that series with the White Sox this afternoon. Justin Verlander will start against Frankie Montas, who is making his first major-league start. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Before the game, the Tigers sent reliever Bruce Rondon home for the rest of the season. Manager Brad Ausmus cited Rondon’s “effort level,” but did not elaborate.
Jake Arrieta struck out 11, and allowed just three hits, as the Chicago Cubs blanked the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 last night. Arrieta became the first major league pitcher to win 20 games this season. Game details are here.

– Calumet blanked Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-23).
– At a triangular at Houghton, the Gremlins defeated Dollar Bay 2-0, L’Anse defeated Dollar Bay 2-0, and Houghton then beat L’Anse 3-0.
– The result of the Hancock-West Iron County match was not reported.
MTU Volleyball Streak Ends
After opening the season with a record 10 straight wins, the Michigan Tech volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season last night, falling to Wisconsin-Parkside 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 17-25). Details are here.
The Michigan Tech football team moved up to 15th in the latest D2Football.com poll this week. The Huskies host Northern Michigan University in the Miner’s Cup game Saturday night.
The Michigan Tech hockey team has been picked to finish second in the WCHA in the preseason media poll, and third in the coaches’ poll. Minnesota State finished on top of both. Alex Petan, Shane Hanna and Jamie Phillips were named to the preseason All-WCHA team. The Huskies open their season at home against Laurentian University October 9th and 10th.
Finlandia Volleyball Falls
The Finlandia University volleyball team won the first set, but the fell to Wisconsin-Superior 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 13-25, 9-25) last night. Details are here.
NHL – Wings Drop OT Exhibition
The Detroit Red Wings couldn’t overcome an early 3-0 deficit, and lost to the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 in overtime last night. Detroit used mostly younger players in their first preseason game, while the defending Stanley Cup champions skated their veterans. Details are here. Last night’s game was in Chicago. The Wings will host the Blackhawks tonight.
