MTU Volleyball to GLIAC Final – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
Forest Park won the state Division Two eight-player football title yesterday, by defeating Portland St. Patrick 54-12. Escanaba’s run in the Division Four 11-player tournament ended with a 24-0 loss to Grand Rapids Catholic Central in the semifinals.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team suffered a 3-2 loss at Wisconsin-Superior yesterday. The Yellowjackets opened up an early 2-0 lead, but the Lions responded with goals by Kendall Bolen-Porter and Adam Valicek to keep the game close. Daniel Spencer took the loss in net, stopping 21 shots.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 7-0 at 13th-ranked Lake Forest College yesterday. The game was close through the first two periods, but the Foresters exploded for six goals in the third period to seal the win. The Lions were outshot 52-7.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team fell 80-54 to Heidelberg University in the consolation game the Hope College Tip-off Tournament in Holland, Michigan, yesterday. Julia Daavettila had 21 points and seven rebounds, and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lions men’s basketball team dropped a 79-62 decision to Millikin University yesterday afternoon. The Lions opened up a quick lead, but the Big Blue surged ahead midway through the first half, and never relinquished the lead. Dylan Underwood led the Lions with 18 points. Millikin out-rebounded Finlandia 48-22.

MTU/NMU
The third-seeded Michigan Tech volleyball team advanced to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship game by eliminating second seed Northern Michigan 3-1 ( 25-22, 16-25, 25-20, and 25-21) in the semifinals yesterday. MacAulay Petersen had 16 kills, Lauren Emmert added seven blocks, and Elle Heinonen recorded 20 digs. Tech will face Ferris State in the title game this afternoon at 3:00. The Bulldogs defeated the Huskies 3-1 last Saturday to earn the regular-season championship, and the top seed in the tournament. Video of the match will be streamed for free here.

Win or lose, the Huskies will be bringing home some hardware. MTU’s Matt Jennings was named the 2017 GLIAC Volleyball Coach of the Year yesterday. Laura DeMarchi was named Freshman of the Year and Setter of the Year. DeMarchi and Mariah Sherman both earned All-GLIAC First Team honors. MacAulay Petersen was named to the Second Team, and Elle Heinonen was an Honorable Mention.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team concluded the Microtel Classic  with an 89-82 overtime loss to host Minnesota-Moorehead yesterday. Tech led by eight at halftime, but had to rally in the final minute to force the extra period. Kyle Monroe scored 40 points, and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Huskies. The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team wrapped up play at that same Microtel Classic with an 85-78 loss to 15th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State yesterday.

The NMU women’s team cruised past Minnesota-Crookston 73-55 yesterday.

The MTU hockey team came from two goals down to salvage a 3-3 tie at Alaska-Anchorage last night. As in Friday’s tie, the Seawolves earned the extra Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings point by winning the shootout. Alex Gillies gave the Huskies an early advantage, but it took third-period scores by Dane Birks and Alex Smith force the tie. Robbie Beydoun gave up all three Anchorage goals, and was replaced by Patrick Munson midway through the contest.

The 20th-ranked NMU hockey squad settled for a split at Alaska-Fairbanks, with a 4-1 loss last night.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Colorado Avalanche this evening. Danny DeKeyser is set to return to the ice, after missing 17 games with a broken ankle. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Red Wings coverage will begin at 5:40 on KBear 102.3.

The Detroit Pistons play the Timberwolves at Minnesota tonight.

NFL
