In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet swept Hancock 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-20).
– Jeffers defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-11).
– L’Anse got past Chassell 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23, 15-8).
– Baraga v Watersmeet – not reported.
– Ontonagon v Bessemer – not reported.
– Ewen-Trout Creek v Hurley – not reported.
In cross country, both Houghton teams placed second to Marquette at the Flivvers Invitational at Kingsford yesterday. Anabel Needham led the girls team with a second-place finish. Maria Velat placed fourth, and Ingrid Seagram ninth. Joe Wood came in second individually for the boys team, and Brandon Peterson placed fourth. Link to full meet results here.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s soccer team plays at Northern Michigan University tonight. Kirsten L’Esperance of the Lions has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. L’Esperance had four goals and an assist in Finlandia’s 13-0 win over Eureka College last Wednesday.
The Finlandia volleyball squad hosts Northland College tonight at 7:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.
MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team claimed a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Northern Michigan University last night. The Huskies won the first two sets, 25-23, 25-22. The Wildcats claimed the third set 25-23. Tech opened up a 10-point lead in the fourth set, but Northern responded with 11 straight points. The Huskies eventually pulled it out, 26-24. Olivia Ghormley had 16 kills. Anna Jonynas and Megan Utlak each had 17 digs.
MLB
Jordan Zimmermann served up three home runs over the first four innings, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Houston Astros 5-4 last night. Trailing 5-0, Detroit made a comeback bid in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one run on a Dawel Lugo single, and three on a JaCoby Jones homer. That ended the scoring for both teams.
The Tigers entertain the Astros again this afternoon. Daniel Norris will start against Gerrit Cole. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers were shut out by the Chicago Cubs 3-0 last night. Each team collected just three hits, but two Milwaukee errors helped Chicago score two runs off Jhoulys Chacín in the second inning. They added an insurance tally off Brandon Woodruff in the seventh.
The Brewers now trail the Cubs by two games in the National League Central Division, and wrap up that series in Chicago tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.
NHL
Former Detroit Red Wings star Steve Yzerman is stepping down as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Yzerman will fill out the final year of his contract as a senior advisor to the team. He says he wants to spend more time with his family at their home in Detroit.
Light the Night Run/Walk
The annual Aspirus Keweenaw Light the Night Fun Run/Walk will be held Saturday at the hospital in Laurium. Activities begin at 7:15 with a free 1K for children. The 5K Fun Run/Walk follows at 7:45. The cost is $25.00 for adults, and $15.00 for students ages 11 through 18. Money raised will support U.P. Kids Big Brothers Big Sisters. You can register online through tomorrow here. You may also sign up between 5:00 and 7:00 in the hospital courtyard Saturday evening.
