The MTU volleyball team ended its season with a thrilling 3-2 (26-24, 26-24, 25-27, 31-33, 12-15) loss to Saginaw Valley State in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference tournament last night. The first four sets went to extra points, with the Huskies taking the first two, and the Cardinals claiming the third and fourth. The fifth set was decided by just three points. Aubrey Ficek led Tech with 30 kills, and Rachel Pohlod had 27 digs. The Huskies finish their season with a record of 16 wins and 15 losses.

NBA
A late rally by the Detroit Pistons fell short, as they lost 105-102 to the New York Knicks last night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 21 points. His three-pointer that would have tied the game caromed off the rim with three second remaining. Andre Drummond had 15 points and nine rebounds in limited action in his first game back since spraining his ankle Saturday night. The Pistons are now 1-6 on the road, and visit the Cleveland Cavaliers tomorrow night.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will skate at Washington tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Wings will play without Darren Helm for the next six to eight weeks. Helm dislocated his shoulder in Tuesday’s loss to the Lightning. Tyler Bertuzzi will fill his spot on the roster.

NFL
In tonight’s NFL game, the New Orleans Saints visit the Carolina Panthers. Please have your picks in The Wolf Pro Football Challenge turned in by noon today at one of our sponsors.

The Green Bay Packers have claimed running back Christine Michael off waivers. Michael started seven games for the Seattle Seahawks this season, but was waived because Thomas Rawls is about to return from injury.

Verlander

MLB
Detroit Tigers’ pitcher Justin Verlander finished a close second in voting for this year’s American League Cy Young Award. The trophy went to his former teammate, Rick Porcello, who won 22 games for the Boston Red Sox. Verlander received 14 first place votes to Porcello’s eight, but two voters did not list him at all on their ballots, and those missing votes cost him the honor. Another former Tiger, Max Scherzer, won the National League Cy Young Award.

Our high school hockey coverage begins Tuesday night, when Jeffers skates at L’Anse. Pregame coverage begins around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
