– Hancock and Marquette skated to a 2-2 tie. Jack Fenton scored both Bulldogs’ goals.
In girls’ high school basketball Friday night, Houghton got past Kingsford 40-34 in overtime.

In boys’ action Friday night…
– Houghton extended its lead in the WestPAC to two games with a 52-32 victory over second-place Calumet. Brad Ohtonen scored 10 points for the Gremlins, Jack Hyrkas lead the Copper Kings with 11.
– Chassell defeated Hancock 61-41.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a 71-35 win over Dollar Bay 71-35.
– Jeffers lost a 45-43 heartbreaker at Watersmeet.
– L’Anse defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 62-47.
– Republic-Michigamme downed Baraga 62-51.
MTU Hockey Sweeps UAH
The Michigan Tech hockey team exploded for 11 goals Saturday night, and routed Alabama Birmingham 11-1. Both Tanner Kero and Blake Pietila recorded the 100th points of their careers in the game. On Friday, Jamie Phillips turned in his third shutout of the season, as the Michigan Tech hockey team blanked the Chargers 5-0.
The 15th-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team cruised to a 74-61 victory over Lake Superior State on Saturday. Danielle Blake led the Huskies with 19 points and nine rebounds.
The men’s team suffered a 66-57 loss to the Lakers. Tech trailed by just a point with six minutes remaining, but LSSU outscored the Huskies 20-12 down the stretch. Ben Stelzer led Tech with 12 points.
Both Michigan Tech teams entertain Northern Michigan tonight. The women’s game tips off at 5:30, and the men’s game at 7:30, at the SDC.
NMU Hockey Sweeps Alaska
Sami Salminen’s goal with 11 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Northern Michigan University to a 3-2 victory over Alaska-Anchorage Saturday night. On Friday, the Wildcats outpointed the Seawolves 5-3.
Both Northern basketball teams defeated Northwood Saturday afternoon. The women’s team claimed a 63-50 victory. The Wildcats men’s team outscored Northwood 18-9 in overtime to earn an 88-79 win.
Finlandia Hockey Swept
The Finlandia men’s hockey team was shut out 3-0 at the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday. On Friday, the Lions lost 6-2.
The Lions’ women’s hockey team remained winless, falling 8-0 to Lake Forest College Friday night, and 5-0 to Adrian College on Saturday.
The Finlandia men’s basketball team outscored Wisconsin-Marinette 107-83 Saturday afternoon. Stats were not provided.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines pounded the Monroe Blues 13-2 Friday night. Jeff Erkkila, Riley Schreiber and Alex Van Wagner each scored twice. On Saturday, the Wolverines lost 6-3 at Eagle River. Josh Harju scored twice for Calumet.
The score of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Monroe Blues Saturday night was not reported.
NHL – Red Wings Resting
The Red Wings are off until Thursday night, when they play at Colorado. Faceoff is at 9:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Prepare for Heat
The Pistons host the Heat tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
There are multiple reports that the Pistons plan to sign veteran guard John Lucas III to a 10-day contract today. Lucas has been playing in China. He would fill the gap left by the injury to Brandon Jennings.
Patriots Win Super Bowl
Tom Brady threw four touchdown passes, as the New England Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 in the Super Bowl last night. New England’s Malcolm Butler sealed the win by intercepting a Russell Wilson pass at the goal line with 20 seconds remaining, as the Seahawks were driving for what would have been the winning score. Brady was named the MVP.
