MTU, Team CC Open Playoffs Today – Friday Sports Wrap

The Michigan Tech hockey team will face Ferris State in the WCHA semifinals tonight. Game time is 7:37 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. The Huskies and Bulldogs split their season series, with each team winning two games.

The Team Copper Country hockey squad opens pool play in the Midget AA Tier Two Tournament with two games today. Team CC earned the playoff berth last fall, and features high school players from Houghton, Calumet, Jeffers, and the state champion Hancock Bulldogs. They’ll face the Lansing Spartans at noon, and then take on Dearborn Belle Tire tonight at 6:00. They’ll wrap up pool play against the Allen Park Huskies tomorrow at 2:00. The annual Copper Country Old Timers Tournament is underway. Last night in 30+ play, Luigi’s edged Monte Carlo 5-4 in a shootout, M and M Powersports blanked Rajala’s Kitchens 4-0, and Cokato downed Sayen’s Auto 4-1. In 40+ play, the Suomi Flyers outscored Bill’s B and B 4-2, and RC Mechanical pounded Baraga Telephone 10-1. In 60+ action, Port Huron defeated Flint 5-2, and T.C. Travelers II slipped past the Monte Carlo Regulars 5-4 in a shootout. In women’s play, the Copper Country Cougars defeated the MTU Club Team 6-2. The tournament will continue through weekend, with games at Dee Stadium, the Houghton County Arena, and the Colosseum. The Detroit Red Wings held the Columbus Blue Jackets scoreless until the final minute, and earned a 3-1 victory last night. Jimmy Howard made 28 saves for Detroit. Luke Glendening had a goal and an assist. The Wings will visit the Florida Panthers tomorrow night.

The Detroit Pistons will host the Sacramento Kings tonight.

High School
There will be no Upper Peninsula teams in the finals of the girls state basketball tournament. Stephenson ended its tournament run with a 45-38 loss to Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart in the semifinals yesterday. NCAA
Michigan State and Michigan open play in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament today. The second-seeded Spartans meet Middle Tennessee State at 2:45 in Midwest Division action. The 11th-seeded Wolverines face Notre Dame in East Division play tonight at 9:40. There were several surprises yesterday. In the Midwest, 11th seeded Gonzaga upset Seton Hall 68-52, and 12th-seeded Little Rock came from behind to edge Purdue 85-83 in double overtime. In the West, 12th-seeded Yale upended Baylor 79-75. In the South, 11th-seeded Wichita State surprised Arizona 65-55. Our tournament coverage continues today at noon on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

In spring training baseball, Mike Pelfrey overcame some early struggles to pitch five scoreless innings, as the Detroit Tigers edged the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 yesterday. Miguel Cabrera homered, as did minor-leaguers Nate Schierholtz and JaCoby Jones. The Tigers face the Cardinals again this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Texas Rangers 5-2 last night. Taylor Jungmann turned in four scoreless innings. Scooter Gennett homered and doubled. The Brewers will face the Reds today.
