MTU Sweeps NMU; Calumet Girls Finish Perfect Season – Friday Sports Wrap

– Calumet completed an undefeated regular season with a 63-38 victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Jeffers stopped L’Anse 58-41.
– Hancock shut down Chassell 40-23.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 49-28.
– Ontonagon got past Ironwood 38-29.

The girls regular season wraps up tonight, as Ewen-Trout Creek hosts Watersmeet.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams closed their regular seasons with home victories over Northern Michigan University last night. The Lady Huskies dominated the Wildcats 80-38. It’s the largest margin of victory for the Huskies over the Wildcats in the history of the rivalry. Danielle Blake led Tech with 25 points. Saginaw Valley State also won last night, so the Huskies and Cardinals finish in a tie for first place in the GLIAC North Division. MTU is seeded third in the GLIAC tournament, and will open at home Tuesday evening against Grand Valley State.

The Tech men’s team missed the playoffs, but still ended its season on a high note with an 85-75 win over Northern. The Wildcats led by two at halftime, but Kyle Monroe scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half to help the Huskies claim the victory.

The Michigan Tech hockey team hosts Alaska tonight and tomorrow night. Face-offs are at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. With four games to play, the Huskies are tied with Bowling Green for second place in the WCHA – just two points behind first-place Minnesota State.

The NMU hockey team skates at Lake Superior State tonight and tomorrow night.

FINLANDIA
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia University women’s basketball team opens play in the Great South Athletic Conference tournament at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina today. Despite winning just two games this season, the Lions are seeded fifth in the seven-team field. They face fourth-seeded Agnes Scott College at 11:00 this morning.

The Finlandia softball team opens its season at the Dome Tournament in Marquette this weekend. The Lions will face Northland College this evening at 6:00… Lake Superior State tomorrow morning at 10:00… Marian University tomorrow at noon… Edgewood College Sunday at noon… and Lakeland College Sunday at 2:00.

Pioneers-Wolverines FeatureGLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers took a 6-0 lead, and then held on to defeat the Calumet Wolverines 7-5 last night.

The Pioneers host the Eagle River Falcons tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. The Wolverines will entertain the Falcons tomorrow night at 7:30 at the Colosseum. Fans wearing official CopperDog 150 gear can get into tomorrow night’s game free.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings are off until tomorrow night’s outdoor game against the Avalanche in Denver. Face-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The Detroit alumni will face the Colorado alumni in an exhibition tonight. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Milwaukee Bucks tomorrow evening.

COPPERDOG 150
CopperDog 150 LogoThe seventh CopperDog 150 will open tonight. Defending champion Dennis LaBoda and 2014 champion Jake Golton lead the field in the three-stage, 137-mile race. The single-stage CopperDog 40 has been expanded this year. It’s now called the CopperDog 80, and will feature a run from Calumet to Eagle River tonight, and a second run from Copper Harbor back to Calumet Sunday morning. Tonight’s opening ceremony begins at 6:30, and the first team leaves the gate on Fifth Street in downtown Calumet at 7:00.
