MTU Suffers OT Loss in GLI Final – Saturday Sports Wrap

The Michigan Tech hockey team fell to Western Michigan University 1-0 in the championship game of  Great Lakes Invitational Friday. MTU goalie Angus Redmond and WMU netminder Ben Blacker matched save for save through regulation. The Broncos outshot the Huskies 7-3 in the extra period. Colt Conrad  scored the game-winner, slicing in a rebound of his own shot off Redmond. It was the only goal Redmond gave up in the tourney. Defenseman Cliff Watson was named to the GLI All-Tournament team.

In the consolation match, Michigan State overcame a three-goal deficit to force overtime against the University of Michigan, but the Wolverines recovered and took a 5-4 victory.

The MTU men’s basketball team entertains Kentucky Wesleyan this afternoon at 2:00.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s basketball team lost 74-48 to the University of Northwestern Friday night in the consolation game of the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament in Green Bay. The game was even through the first 15 minutes. A 13-0 run by the Eagles late in the first half gave them a lead the Lions never challenged. Marcus Geralds had 20 points and 20 rebounds for Finlandia.

The Portage Lake Pioneers visit the Calumet Wolverines for a New Year’s Eve contest at the Colosseum tonight. The game will begin at 5:00.

The Detroit Pistons’ struggled continued with a 105-98 loss to the Atlanta Hawks Friday night. The Pistons fell behind early, and trailed by 17 early in the second half. They played without Marcus Morris, who was rested because of tendinitis in his knee. Still, they came back late, cutting the deficit to four points with four minutes to play. They couldn’t close the gap completely, though, and lost their second straight game, and seventh of their last eight. Jon Leuer led Detroit with 20 points. The Pistons play at Miami tomorrow evening.

The Detroit Red Wings  skate at Toronto in the outdoor Centennial Classic tomorrow afternoon.

The NFL regular season wraps up tomorrow. The Packers-Lions game at Detroit will decide who wins the NFC North Division title. The winner will host their first playoff game. The loser will need to rely on the New York Giants defeating Washington to get a wild card playoff berth.

The Lions will play without running back Theo Riddick. Center Travis Swanson is listed as doubtful. The Packers will be without running back James Starks, and have five players listed as questionable, including receiver Randall Cobb. Link to the full injury report here.
