The Michigan Tech hockey team climbed to number-five in this week’s USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls. The Huskies are 8-0, and hold the longest winning streak in the nation. It’s Tech’s best start since 1972.
Michigan Tech’s football victory over Ashland Saturday has pushed the Huskies up to third place in the NCAA Super Region Four rankings. Six teams from the region make the playoffs, but four spots generally go to the champions of the four conferences included in the rankings. GLIAC North leader Ferris State is ranked first in the Super Region. Tech needs a victory Saturday against Lake Erie to bolster its bid for an at-large berth.
NHL – Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings are off until Friday, when they host the Blackhawks. Pavel Datsyuk skated with the team yesterday, and said his groin injury is improving. He may be ready to rejoin the lineup on Friday.
NBA – Pistons
The Detroit Pistons erased a 19-point halftime deficit, but wound up losing to the Bulls 102-91 last night. Detroit closed the gap to two points with three minutes remaining, but couldn’t complete the effort. Josh Smith led Detroit with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Andre Drummond scored 12, and grabbed 15 rebounds, even though the Pistons spelled his name wrong on his game jersey – see a picture on today’s sports wrap at KeweenawReport.com. The Pistons play at Washington tomorrow night. That’ll give the team enough time to get Drummond a new shirt.
