MTU Soccer Heads to NCAA Tourney – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

The Calumet High School volleyball team faces Traverse City St. Francis in the division three state tournament quarterfinals tonight. The Copper Kings are ranked seventh in the state in the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association poll. The Gladiators are ranked fifth. The game will start at 6:00 at Sault Ste. Marie High School. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

In division four, Forest Park will face Newberry in a quarterfinal tonight at Manistique.

Calumet has been named volleyball Team of the Year for Divisions One through Three by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Kate Bonacorsi of the Copper Kings was named large school Coach of the Year. Kingsford’s Maddy Kreider was named Miss U.P. Volleyball. Ella Schuetter of Manistique was selected as Large School Offensive Player of the Year, and Kingsford’s Maddy Kreider as Defensive Player of the Year.

Local players named to the Dream Team include Laina Kariniemi and Allie Bjorn from Calumet. Jackie Kiilunen from the Copper Kings was placed on the large school first team, along with Brynn Arko from Houghton, and Brielle Kero and Brooke Koskela from Hancock. Second team players include Caitlin Strom and Maddie Torola from Calumet, Clea Ollanketo and Laney Johnson from Houghton, and Sara Johnson from Jeffers. Abi Codere from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Makenna Hendrickson from Baraga, and Irelynd McGeshick from Ewen-Trout Creek were placed in the small school second team.

The L’Anse girls basketball team will host a skills camp for young players. Sessions will take place at the high school gym this Saturday, December 2nd, and December 16th. Kindergarteners through third graders will meet from 10 until 11:30. Fourth through sixth graders will meet from 11:30 until 1:00.

The registration fee is $10 for the first player from a family, and $5 for each additional sibling, with a maximum of $20 per family. All participants will get a t-shirt. To register, call 906-201-7083.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team is heading to the NCAA tournament. The Huskies are seeded eighth in the Midwest Region, and will play at top-seeded Ashland Thursday evening at 6:00. It’s the first tournament appearance for Tech since 2014. Northwood and Cedarville will meet in the other opening-round game at Ashland.

The Huskies join Northern Michigan in the tournament. After winning the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference tourney, the Wildcats are seeded second in the NCAA event, and will host an opening-round series for the first time in school history. Northern will play seventh-seed Maryville Friday at 1:00. Grand Valley State will face McKendree at 10:00 a.m.

NHL

The Red Wings are in Stockholm, where they’ll meet the Senators on Thursday. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons host the Hawks in another NBA In-Season Tournament game tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

Broncos’ kicker Will Lutz missed a 41-yard field goal that would have won the game as time expired in last night’s game against the Bills. But, Buffalo was flagged for having too many men on the field. Lutz nailed the second chance from five yards closer, to give Denver a 24-22 victory.

Clay Matthews and Aaron Kampman will be added to the Packers Hall of Fame. Matthews played 10 seasons as a linebacker in Green Bay, and is the team’s all-time career sacks leader. Kampman played eight seasons as a defensive end, and is fifth on the team’s career sacks list.

MLB

The Brewers have found their next manager, and they didn’t need to look very far. Multiple reports say bench coach Pat Murphy will be promoted to take over for Craig Counsell, who recently left the team to become manager of the Cubs. Murphy spent eight seasons as Counsell’s right-hand man. It’s his first official major league managerial job, although he did spend a half-season as interim manager of the Padres in 2015.

The Tigers are looking for a new assistant hitting coach. The Yankees have hired James Rowson to be their their head hitting coach. Rowson spent just one season in Detroit. This will be his third time working for New York.
