MLB

To the surprise of no one, the Tigers picked up the $11.5 million option on Mark Canha’s contract for the 2024 season. Canha joined the club just a few days ago, following a trade with the Brewers.  Also to no one’s surprise, shortstop Javier Báez did not opt out of his contract with Detroit, electing to keep the four years remaining on his current deal with $98 million in guaranteed salary.

Detroit also exercised the $3.5 million team option on veteran catcher Carson Kelly, whom they signed off waivers from the Diamondbacks late in the 2023 season. The Tigers designated veteran pitcher Tyler Alexander for assignment. Utility player Zack Short was placed on waivers, and claimed by the Mets. Pitchers Trey Wingenter and Andrew Vasquez were also waived. No teams claimed them, so they have been assigned to Toledo.

The Brewers are looking for a new manager. After being courted by the Mets, Guardians and Astros, Craig Counsell decided to stay close to home, and signed a five-year deal worth more than $40 million with the Cubs. That will make him the highest-paid manager in baseball. Milwaukee owner Mark Attanasio said the rest of the team’s coaching staff will remain in place next season.
