Lobstein Lifts Tigers
Kyle Lobstein allowed just one run over 5-2/3rds innings, as the Tigers defeated the Giants 6-1 last night. Lobstein gave up just four hits, as he earned his first major league win. Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer for Detroit. Torii Hunter had three hits.
The Tigers host the Royals this afternoon. Justin Verlander will pitch against Jeremy Guthrie. Hear the first pitch at 4:08 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
Kansas City also won, so Detroit still trails the Royals by two games in the American League Central Division. They’re a half-game behind in the race for the second wild card spot.
The ankle injury that’s been plaguing Cabrera for the past month has been diagnosed as a bone spur. He may need surgery to correct it after the season. Cabrera was removed from last night’s game after aggravating the injury while running the bases.
Two injured Tigers pitchers are making progress. Anibal Sanchez did some throwing yesterday. He’s missed a month with an injured shoulder. Team officials say that, if he feels okay today, they’ll step up his workout program. The best-case scenario would return him to action in the final week of the regular season. Reliever Joakim Soria will pitch a simulated game this afternoon. If that goes well, he could return as early as Wednesday.
Brewers Fall Again
The fading Brewers lost to the Cardinals 9-1 yesterday. Saint Louis broke through with four runs off Jimmy Nelson in the fourth inning. Milwaukee has lost 11 of its last 12 games.
The Brewers open a four-game home series against the Marlins tonight. Yovani Gallardo will start against Brad Penny.
The loss dropped the Brewers into third place in the National League Central Division, five games behind the Cardinals, and a half-game behind the Pirates. They’re a half-game back in the race for the second wild card position.
