MTU, NMU Fall in GLI Openers – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

On today’s boys basketball schedule, Jeffers plays a 4:30 game at Ishpeming.

The first MTU Showcase takes place today, pitting teams from the Copper Mountain Conference against teams from the Skyline Conference at the SDC.

  • 2:30 – Girls – Lake Linden-Hubbell v Norway.
  • 4:00 – Boys – Lake Linden Hubbell v Stephenson.
  • 5:30 – Boys – Baraga v North Central.
  • 7:00 – Boys – Dollar Bay-Tamarack City v Forest Park. Streamed coverage from our Iron River station, WIKB, is available here.

Tickets are $7 and include all four games. They may be purchased at the door or online.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team fell to sixth-ranked Western Michigan University 4-3 in overtime in the opening round of the Great Lakes Invitational yesterday. The Huskies rallied with a pair of third-period goals to force extra time. Tim Washe of the Broncos found the net just 44 seconds into overtime to end the game. Ryder Matter, Trevor Kukkonen and Matthew Campbell scored for Tech. Derek Mullahy made a career-high 39 saves.

Northern Michigan dropped a 2-0 decision to top-ranked Michigan State in the other GLI semifinal. Ryan Ouellette made 41 saves over 55 minutes, as the Wildcats were outshot 48-16.

MTU and NMU will meet in the consolation match today at 3:30. The Spartans and Broncos will play for the title at 7:00 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

Yesterday’s semifinals drew a sell-out crowd of more than 9,900 fans.

NBA

The Pistons host the Magic Wednesday. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL

The Red Wings broke their four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Capitals yesterday. Alex DeBrincat scored twice. Lucas Raymond found the net, and Patrick Kane’s goal was the 1,300th point of his career. Washington’s Alex Ovechkin netted his 870th career NHL goal, and is now 25 away from matching Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. Alex Lyon made 25 saves.

The Wings host the Penguins tomorrow night.  Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The Vikings shaded the Packers 27-25 yesterday. Minnesota’s Sam Darnold passed for a career-best 377 yards and three touchdowns, as the Vikings held off a late Green Bay comeback. The Packers fall to 11-5, and will conclude their season Sunday against the Bears. The Vikings improve to 14-2, and will play the Lions Sunday night in a game that will decide the NFC North Division championship and the top-seed in the playoffs.

Last night, the Commanders clinched a playoff berth with a 30-24 overtime victory over the Falcons.

The Lions visit the 49ers tonight, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift.
