Tigers Win In Extras
The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning, and held on for an 8-6 victory over the Rays last night. Tampa scored four runs early off Max Scherzer, who settled down and pitched through the seventh. Detroit came back, and took a brief lead on a J.D. Martinez homer in the eighth. The Rays tied it with a run off Joba Chamberlain. Ian Kinsler led off the top of the 11th with a triple. Three walks later, he scored… then Torii Hunter scored on a wild pitch… and Bryan Holaday drove in Miguel Cabrera with a sacrifice fly. Joe Nathan gave up a run in the bottom of the 11th, but earned his 26th save.
That set continues at Tampa tonight. Rick Porcello will start against Jake Odorizzi. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
Kansas City also won, so Detroit remains two games back in the American League Central Division.
Andy Dirks’ return to the Tigers has been derailed again. Dirks has missed the entire season after back surgery this spring. His rehab assignment was delayed recently because of a strained hamstring. That hamstring acted up again early this week, and Dirks is undergoing medical tests. At this point, manager Brad Ausmus says it’s unlikely that Dirks will be able to return to the Tigers this season.
Justin Verlander threw some test pitches last night, and said his tight pitching shoulder felt better. Verlander missed his last start because of shoulder inflammation, but hopes to be ready for his next turn in the rotation Saturday. Reliever Joakim Soria also did some throwin yesterday, and said his left oblique muscle is still sore.
Brewers Quiet Jays
Mike Fiers turned in seven strong innings, as the Brewers defeated the Blue Jays 6-1. After giving up a run in the second, Fiers, Zach Duke and Brandon Kintzler retired the final 24 Toronto batters.
The Brewers wrap up that quick interleague set against the Jays this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will start against R.A. Dickey.
Saint Louis also won, so Milwaukee continues to lead the National League Central Division by two-and-a-half games.
Milwaukee reliever Jim Henderson underwent shoulder surgery yesterday. Henderson had been sidelined in May. The surgery was necessary after other rehab methods failed, and will end his season. Meanwhile, the Brewers are hoping Kyle Lohse can return to the starting rotation next week. He’s recovering from a sprained ankle. Matt Garza has been doing some throwing, but his rib cage injury is expected to keep him out until early next month.
Twilight League Finals Delayed

Game two will be played Friday at 6:00 at the Dollar Bay field. If necessary, game three will be played Saturday at the Dollar Bay field.
