MLB: Tigers Blanked by Twins
The Tigers’ bats were quiet last night, as they fell to the Twins 2-0. Detroit batters collected only six hits against Minnesota starter Kyle Gibson and two relievers. Tigers’ pitchers were almost as good. Drew Smyly tossed six innings… giving up just a home run to Eduardo Escobar. Minnesota’s other run came off Joe Nathan… whose struggles continued when he loaded the bases in the ninth.
The Tigers host the Twins again this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will face Samuel Deduno. Hear the first pitch at 4:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Tigers’ pitcher Luke Putkonen underwent elbow surgery yesterday to repair a bone spur. Putkonen has missed much of this season because of the elbow problem. Rehab from the surgery will take about two months. Outfielder Andy Dirks has been cleared to resume full baseball activities. He’s recovering from back surgery, and could begin a minor-league rehab assignment within the next week.
Brewers Fall in 9th
The Brewers tied the game with a four run rally in the seventh inning… but wound up losing to the Reds 6-5. Cincinnati had taken the lead with four unearned runs in the fifth inning. Milwaukee committed four errors in that frame. Billy Hamilton’s RBI single off Francisco Rodriguez in the top of the ninth drove home the winning run.
The Brewers continue that home set against the Reds this evening. Yovani Gallardo will start against Mat Latos.
Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny will rejoin the Brewers for today’s game. Gorzelanny has missed all of this season because of shoulder surgery. The Brewers have also called utility player Elian Herrera up from Nashville. Outfielder Logan Schafer and utility player Irving Falu have been sent down to make room.
Lions Drop Houston
The Detroit Lions have terminated the contract of cornerback Chris Houston. Houston was a defensive starter for Detroit for the past four seasons. He underwent a surgical procedure on a toe recently, had not participated in preseason workouts, and apparently would not have been ready for the start of the season.
