MTU Men’s Basketball Schedule Revealed – Tuesday Sports Wrap

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play last evening…
• Bucko’s/Labatts lost to A and S Industrial/Loukus Tech 17-8, then fell to McGann’s/Northern Auto 29-9.
• Koppers defeated Downtowner Two 27-9, and then got past Pat’s Foods/Buckos 18-16.

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League action last night…
• Bella Coppo scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning, as Crush/Diamond House/Baby E’s edged Superior Service 5-4. Sarah Audette and Keirstyn Codere each homered for Crush, and Olivia Shunk had a double. Raili Therian, Anita Magyer and Shea Donnelly each singled for Superior Service. MacKenzie LePage earned the win with relief from Shunk. Milly Loukus took the loss.
• Tervo Agency came from behind to defeat Superior National Bank 8-6. SNB built a 4-1 lead over four innings, with hits from Hannah Impola, Leah Kiilunen, Delaney Heinonen and Kim Aho. In the fifth inning, Tervo’s Jill Keskimaki scored off of a hit from Heather Huffmaster. Tervo’s then plated six runs in the sixth inning, powered by hits from Mel Baker, Kyllee Puuri, and Jill Keskimaki. Kim Aho singled home two late runs for SNB. Baker took the win and Heinonen took the loss.

Twilight League Baseball

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball this evening…
• REL-Mohawk Technology faces Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker at the Hancock Driving Park.
• Northern Driveline meets Houghton Building Supply-Stanton at the Stanton field.

Youth Hockey

Team Copper Country will hold tryouts for its upcoming hockey season Sunday from 11:00 until 1:00 at the SDC. The tryout fee is $20.00. The registration deadline is this Friday. Register by text to 906-231-3604, and include your name, birth year and position. No walk-ins will be allowed to try out. Players should bring a light and a dark-colored jersey. College Basketball

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team has unveiled its 2021-2022 schedule. The Huskies will open the season at a tournament at Lewis University. Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play begins at Northwood December 4th. Games against Northern Michigan University will be played in Houghton December 6th, and in Marquette January 31st. Tech will host Finlandia University December 15th. Learn more here.

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team has added a new recruit. Manuel Mata is from Deerfield, Kansas, where he averaged 25 points per game as a high school senior. He’s transferring in from Garden City Community College.

NBA

The NBA championship series continues tomorrow night in Milwaukee. The Suns lead the Bucks 2-1.

MLB

Rounds two through 10 of the Major League Baseball Draft went into the books last evening…
• The Detroit Tigers used their second-round pick on Texas high school shortstop Izaac Pacheco. Most of the rest of their picks went to pitchers, including University of Alabama righthander Dylan Smith in the third round. The only position players taken were North Carolina State first baseman Austin Murr in the sixth round, and Kentucky shortstop Austin Schultz in the 10th.
• The Milwaukee Brewers chose TCU lefthander Russell Smith in the second round, then loaded up on infielders, including Louisville third baseman Alex Binelas in the third round, Duke shortstop Ethan Murray in the fifth, University of Minnesota Zack Raabe in the eighth, and University of South Carolina catcher Wes Clarke in the 10th.

The draft concludes today with 10 more rounds.

The Major League Baseball All-Star game will be played tonight in Atlanta. Reliever Gregory Soto will be the Tigers’ only player on the American League squad. The Brewers will be represented by pitchers Corbin Burnes, Josh Hader and Freddy Peralta. Brandon Woodruff is also on the roster, but will not play, after starting Sunday’s game for Milwaukee.

Horseshoes

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last evening…
• Calumet One held on to its one-game lead in the season standings by blanking 41 Lumber 9-0.
• Second place Dreamland One kept pace by shutting out Ahmeek Fire Department 9-0.
• Rocky’s stopped Drift Inn 7-2.
• L and L blanked Loading Zone 9-0.
• Calumet Electronics shut down Dreamland Two 8-1.
• Harter’s Party Store defeated Bucko’s Party Store 7-2.

Running

Tomorrow is the final day to sign up for the Hancock Canal Run. Saturday’s event will feature eight different races, ranging from a two-mile fun run/walk to a half marathon. To register, click here.
