MTU Men Upset GVSU – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The regular high school hockey season wrapped up Saturday, as Jeffers lost 7-2 at Escanaba. The Eskymos broke the game open early, with five goals in the first period. Jackson Rocchi and Luke Marcotte scored for the Jets.

The hockey playoffs open with the regional semifinals at the SDC on Thursday. Houghton will face Hancock at 6:00, and Calumet will meet Jeffers at 8:00. Our pregame coverage will begin at 5:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team had the weekend off.

The Northern Michigan University hockey squad defeated Lake Superior State University 5-1 Saturday night. The win salvaged a weekend split, but the Lakers claimed the Cappo Cup with a 7-6 total goals advantage in the two-game series.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team lost to sixth-ranked Grand Valley State University 70-49 on Saturday. Cassidy Trotter led the Huskies with 15 points.

The Tech men’s team upended the 21st-ranked Lakers 78-70. Kyle Monroe scored 41 points.

Both Northern Michigan University teams defeated Davenport University Saturday – the women 72-63, and the men 80-74 in overtime.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team wrapped up a winless season with a 9-1 loss at Trine University Saturday. Brenna Ceglar scored the Lions’ only goal. Annah Smiddy made 64 saves.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers outscored the Calumet Wolverines 13-6 Saturday night.

Exhibition Hockey

At the Battle of the Bridge hockey game Saturday night at Dee Stadium, the Michigan U.P. Veterans Hockey Club outscored the Saginaw Spirit Warriors 9-4.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Calgary Flames tonight. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Portland Trail Blazers this evening.

Detroit has brought forward Donta Hall up from the Grand Rapids Drive on a 10-day contract. Hall has averaged 15 points per game in the G-League this season.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers opened their Grapefruit League schedule by playing to an 8-8 tie with the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday. Jordan Zimmermann pitched two shutout innings. He struck out three, but also walked three.

The Tigers split their squad for games against the Atlanta braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates today.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ Cactus League opener yesterday against the Texas Rangers was rained out. The Brewers will face the San Diego Padres today.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with wide receiver Danny Amendola. He caught 62 passes for the team last season.
