Matthew Boyd turned in eight shutout innings, as the Detroit Tigers edged the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 last night. Niko Goodrum homered for Detroit, and Mike Gerber doubled home a run with his first major league hit. The Reds’ only score came off Shane Greene in the ninth.
The Tigers wrap up that quick interleague set in Detroit this afternoon. Mike Fiers will start against Sal Romano. Pregame coverage begins at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Fiers remains a Tiger, despite speculation that he might be sent to another team before yesterday’s non-waiver trade deadline. One Tiger was dealt – outfielder Leonys Martin was sent to the Cleveland Indians, in exchange for minor-league shortstop Willi Castro. Castro was rated as the eighth-best prospect in the Cleveland system. He’s been assigned to Detroit’s Double-A club at Erie. Detroit also sent minor league pitcher Kyle Dowdy to the Indians. Gerber was brought up from Toledo to replace Martin.
Wade Miley tossed seven shutout innings for the Milwaukee Brewers, as they shaded the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 last night. Lorenzo Cain doubled home the game’s only run in the third inning, then made a highlight-reel catch at the center field wall to preserve the shutout in the seventh. Joaquin Soria and Jeremy Jeffress completed the two-hit shutout.
The Brewers continue that series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Rich Hill.
Milwaukee traded for Baltimore second baseman Jonathon Schoop before yesterday’s deadline. Schoop was an all-star last season, though he had slumped a bit this year. In exchange, the Brewers give up second baseman Jonathan Villar, and two of their top-15 prospects – pitcher Luis Ortiz, and infielder Jean Carmona.

Coaches in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference aren’t optimistic about the chances of the Michigan Tech football team this fall. The Huskies have been picked to finish eighth out of the nine teams in the league. Grand Valley finished on top of the preseason poll, followed by Ferris State. Northern Michigan was ranked seventh.
The Michigan Tech hockey team introduced 11 new recruits yesterday. The incoming class includes goaltender Matt Jurusik, defensemen Tyrell Buckley, Eric Gotz, and Colin Swoyer, and forwards Andrew Bellant, Trenton Bliss, Alec Broetzman, Brian Halonen, Zach Noble, Tommy Parrottino, and Tanner Polglaze. Two are Michiganders – Bellant is from Linden, and Parrottino hails from Rochester Hills. You can meet all of the new Huskies here.
