NHL
Tomas Tatar’s goal with less than three minutes remaining lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres Saturday afternoon. The Wings took an early lead on goals by Brad Richards and Riley Sheahan, but the Sabres came back to tie it. Detroit surged ahead again when Henrik Zetterberg scored early in the third period, only to have Buffalo retie the game. Petr Mrazek stopped 32 of 35 shots to earn the win. The Wings skate at New Jersey tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Former Michigan Tech hockey standout John Scott has been voted one of the captains of this year’s NHL All-Star teams. This year’s format will feature squads from each of the four divisions in a three-on-three tournament. The captains were selected by fan voting. Scott is hardly a superstar – he’s played for a half-dozen NHL teams over the past 10 seasons. Known as an enforcer, he has five goals, six assists and 542 penalty minutes in his career. Scott has appeared in just 11 games with the Phoenix Coyotes this season, and has cleared waivers three times as he’s been sent to their AHL farm team. An online campaign to recruit votes was successful, though, and he’ll join Patrick Kane, Jaromir Jagr and Alex Ovechkin as a team captain when the game is played January 31st in Nashville.
NBA
The Indianapolis Pacers used a big second half to defeat the Detroit Pistons 94-82 Saturday night. Indy outscored Detroit 53-40 in the second stanza of a game that ended with a shoving match between the teams.
