MTU Hoops Teams Fall at Northwood – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In hockey last evening, Houghton got past Kingsford 3-1. 

The Wisigan Cup event will be held at the SDC this weekend. Because of the late withdrawal of Lakeland High School, the teams will play an abbreviated schedule. Negaunee faces Merrill this evening at 6:30. Jeffers will take on Hancock tonight at 8:30. The Jets will play Merrill tomorrow at 1:00.

In girls high school basketball last night…
– Hancock shut down Lake Linden-Hubbell 61-6. Every Bulldog scored, led by Marina Kero’s 13 points.
– Jeffers stopped Republic-Michigamme 64-20.
– L’Anse defeated Baraga 51-44. Maija Rice of the Purple Hornets led all scorers with 21 points. Rylie Koskinen and Reide Osterman each scored 10 for the Vikings.
– Ontonagon cruised past Wakefield-Marenisco 55-32.
– Ewen-Trout Creek pounded Watersmeet 66-19.

In girls action tonight, Houghton entertains Chassell.

In boys play last night…
– Houghton dispatched Calumet 52-32.
– Chassell outscored Republic-Michigamme 73-42. Bill Rautiola scored 25 for the Panthers.

On the boys schedule this evening…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell visits Dollar Bay-Tamarack City for the Blue Bolts’ homecoming game. Our broadcast will begin around 7:00 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Hancock travels to Ontonagon.
– Chassell entertains Bessemer.
– Baraga visits Republic-Michigamme.
– L’Anse hosts Wakefield-Marenisco.
– Ewen-Trout Creek journeys to Stephenson.

The Houghton High School swim team entertains Sault Ste. Marie tomorrow.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team skates at Alabama-Huntsville tonight and tomorrow night.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team hosts Ferris State this weekend.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams lost at Northwood last evening.

The women couldn’t overcome a cold start, and fell 62-50. The Huskies scored just six points on the first quarter. Michelle LaFave led Tech with 20 points.

The men also started slowly, and trailed by 20 points at halftime. A second-half rally closed the gap, but they lost 68-63. Isaac Appleby had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Both Tech teams play at Saginaw Valley State tomorrow.

The Northern Michigan University women’s team defeated Saginaw Valley State 71-66 last night. The men’s team fell to the Cardinals 68-63.

Both Northern teams visit Northwood tomorrow.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team skates at Wisconsin-Superior tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team, and both basketball teams, have the weekend off. 

The Lions men’s soccer team has announced a new recruit. Jalen Smith is a goalkeeper from Louisville, Kentucky.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers entertain the Eagle River Falcons tonight, and the Fond Du Lac Bears tomorrow. Both games will start at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

The Calumet Wolverines will host the Bears tonight, and the Falcons tomorrow. Games will begin at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings return to action when they visit the New York Rangers tonight. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons welcome the Toronto Raptors tonight.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers have re-signed shortstop Jordy Mercer. It’s a minor-league deal with a major-league camp invitation. Mercer played for Detroit last season. He missed most of the first half with injuries, but returned to hit .305 after the All-Star break. He’ll compete with Niko Goodrum for the starting slot this season.
