MTU Hoops Teams Fall at GVSU – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In boys high school basketball last night…
• Houghton dropped a 57-51 decision to Negaunee. The Gremlins opened an early advantage, but the Miners quickly regrouped and led by five at the end of the first quarter. Houghton came back to take a three-point halftime lead, but Negaunee controlled the third quarter. The Gremlins narrowed the gap down the stretch, but the Miners used a strong final push to take the win. Negaunee’s Gavin Saunders led all scorers with 27 points. Luke Hill scored 14 for the Gremlins, and Lane Laux added 11.
• Calumet shut down Baraga 62-35. Blake Tarvis scored 18 for the Copper Kings. Daniel Connor netted 13 for the Vikings, who totaled just 10 points in the second half.
• Jeffers smothered Bessemer 73-29. The Jets improve to 8-1.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City shaded Ewen-Trout Creek 47-46.
• Chassell defeated Ironwood 55-49. The Panthers were led by Eli Danison with 29 points.

In girls play last night…
• Calumet lost to Westwood 53-38.
• Hancock fell to Ishpeming 55-18.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell stopped Ontonagon 65-35.
• Ewen-Trout Creek overpowered Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 54-18.
• Chassell lost 45-25 at Ironwood.

• Hancock entertains Ontonagon.

In girls play this evening…
• Houghton visits Baraga.
• Hancock tips off at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams lost at Grand Valley State last night.

The women’s team was no match for the top-ranked Lakers, falling 74-30. The Huskies scored just eight points in the first half. Katelyn Meister led the Huskies with seven points.

The men’s team trailed by 14 at halftime, and lost 87-64. Marcus Tomashek scored 14 for Tech.

Both MTU teams will play at Davenport University tomorrow.

Both Northern hoops teams claimed wins at Davenport last evening.

The women took command with a 23-0 run midway through the first half, and closed out a 73-47 win. Makaylee Kuhn scored 23 points.

The men got 28 points from Max Weisbrod, on the way to an 81-63 victory.

Both NMU teams will play at Grand Valley tomorrow.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan hockey teams will face off tomorrow night at 6:07 in Marquette.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers visit the Mosinee Papermakers tonight.

The Calumet Wolverines have the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings pulled out a 4-3 shootout victory over the Kings last night. Robby Fabbri scored twice. Jeff Petry added a goal in regulation. Lucas Raymond and Patrick Kane scored in the shootout. Alex Lyon made 40 saves.

The Wings visit the Ducks Sunday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 7:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Warriors tonight. Coverage will start at 8:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

All of the games in the final week of the NFL regular season games will be played Sunday…
• The Lions host the Vikings in a 1:00 game, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
• The Packers entertain the Bears in a 4:25 contest.

MLB

The Tigers have re-signed reliever Andrew Vasquez to a one-year minor league contract, with a spring training invite.
