MTU Hoops Teams Earn Wins – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey tonight, Hancock skates at Negaunee.

In boys basketball this evening…
– Calumet plays at Houghton.
– L’Anse faces Iron Mountain – that game was originally scheduled to be played in L’Anse, but has been moved to Iron Mountain.
– Ontonagon visits Bessemer.

In girls hoops tonight…
– Chassell plays at Hancock. Our broadcast will begin around 7:00 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Calumet welcomes L’Anse.
– Ewen-Trout Creek hosts Wakefield-Marenisco.
– Baraga tips off at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team fell 59-49 to Lakeland University last evening. Taylor Pertile scored 19 points for the Lions.

The Finlandia men’s team lost 93-57 at Buena Vista University yesterday. Jaden Janke led the Lions with 15 points. Those teams play again this afternoon in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Hancock softball standout Delaney Heinonen will play for the Finlandia Lions. Heinonen has been the Copper Country Conference Pitcher of the Year the past two seasons.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team built an early lead, then hung on for a 66-57 victory at Minnesota-Duluth yesterday afternoon. The Huskies had a 21-point advantage at halftime, but the Bulldogs closed the gap to just three points late in the game. Hannah Hobson had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Tech.

Dawson Bilski scored 22 points, as the Huskies men’s squad defeated Winona State University 69-50 yesterday. The Huskies broke open a close game with a 12-1 run at the end of the first half, and were never threatened down the stretch.

The Northern Michigan University men’s team lost Bellarmine University 84-75 at the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville yesterday.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons outscored the Minnesota Timberwolves 129-123 in overtime last night. Blake Griffin scored 34 points, despite suffering from flu-like symptoms that forced him to spend the day attached to an IV. Reggie Bullock added a career-best 33 points. The Pistons visit the Charlotte Hornets tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings visit the Carolina Hurricanes tonight. Pregame coverage starts at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift. Jonathan Bernier will start in goal. Jimmy Howard will be available as a back-up, despite suffering some back problems before Tuesday night’s game.

NFL
There is no Thursday NFL game tonight, but please remember to have your picks in The Wolf Pro Football Challenge turned in by noon today at one of our sponsors.

The Detroit Lions officially ended running back Kerryon Johnson’s promising rookie season yesterday by placing him on the injured reserve list. Johnson sprained his knee in the game against the Panthers on November 18th, and hasn’t played since.
