– Calumet blanked Kingsford 8-0. Jake Anderson scored twice for the Copper Kings. Ryan Nelson had a goal and two assists, and Trevor Johnson had three assists.

MTU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team opened up a 20 point halftime lead, and cruised past Tiffin 74-56 yesterday. Kylie Moxley led a balanced attack with 14 points. On Saturday, the Huskies shut down Ohio Dominican 63-44.
Trout Creek’s Dillon Gordon scored a career-best 21 points, as the MTU men’s team defeated Tiffin 76-59 yesterday. Bryan Heath added 17 points. On Saturday, the Huskies scored the final six points of the game, and earned a 62-59 victory over Ohio Dominican. Heath’s layup with 22 seconds remaining gave the Huskies the lead, and Jeff Gregory sank two free throws to seal the win with seven seconds to go.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Dominican 70-62 yesterday. The Wildcats defeated Tiffin 65-60 on Saturday. The NMU men’s team got past Ohio Dominican 75-71 yesterday. On Saturday, Northern lost a 57-56 heartbreaker to Tiffin when Korab Imami of the Dragons made a layup with one second remaining.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team remained winless with a 56-43 loss to Martin Luther College yesterday. Caitlin Hewitt led the Lions with 12 points. The Lions dropped a 72-58 decision to Bethany Lutheran Saturday evening. Mikayla Hakela led the Lions with 18 points.
The Finlandia men’s team earned its second victory of the season with an 80-74 win over Martin Luther yesterday. Five Lions scored in double figures, led by Marcus Geralds with 16 points. Finlandia lost to Bethany Lutheran 74-64 on Saturday. Brandon Robinson scored 20 for the Lions.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers earned a split in their weekend series at Eagle River with an 8-5 victory Saturday night. Cody Sivonen had a hat trick and an assist. On Friday, the Pioneers lost to the Falcons 6-3. Ted Pietila had two goals and an assist. The Calumet Wolverines had the weekend off.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at New Jersey tonight. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Orlando Magic this evening.
NFL
The Green Bay Packers’ string of four straight NFC North titles ended yesterday with a 20-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. A late Packers drive that could have tied or won the game ended when Vikings’ safety Xavier Rhodes intercepted an Aaron Rodgers pass. Green Bay will open the playoffs at Washington Sunday afternoon at 4:40. The Vikings will host Seattle Sunday at 1:05. Hear all of the playoff games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Detroit Lions closed their season with a 24-20 victory over the Chicago Bears. Matthew Stafford threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns.
Nordic Skiing
On the opening day of competition at the 2016 U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships yesterday…
– Scott Patterson from the APU Nordic Ski Center won the men’s 15k Classic. Adam Martin and Ian Torchia from Northern Michigan University placed third and seventh. Results are here.
– Caitlin Patterson from the Craftsbury Green Racing Project won the women’s 10k Classic. Vivian Hett from NMU placed 13th. Results are here.
The Freestyle Sprint competition will be held today. The Freestyle distance events will be held Thursday, and the Classic sprints on Saturday. Check the full schedule here.
