MTU Hoops Teams Advance in GLIAC Tourney – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In hockey last night…
 • Hancock stopped Negaunee 9-1. Calvin Heinonen had four goals and an assist for the Bulldogs. Austin Salani had a goal and four assists. Tyler Melvig, Kyle Maki, Chad Nordstrom and Luke Marcotte each scored once. Daniel Wroblewski faced only seven shots.

• Hancock downed Baraga 48-43.
• Ontonagon smothered L’Anse 62-25.
• Ewen-Trout Creek downed Forest Park 63-31. Elise Besonen scored 24 for the Panthers.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Watersmeet 58-41. Kaci Destrampe led the Lakes with 20 points.

In boys action last night…
• Houghton fell to Westwood 50-30.
• Calumet edged Hancock 34-32. Brevin Antila’s jump shot as time expired was the game-winner.
• Chassell stopped Ontonagon 79-51. Karl Rautiola led the Panthers with 32 points.
• L’Anse lost at Bessemer 51-45.
• Ewen-Trout Creek downed Forest Park 76-48.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Watersmeet 63-54. Travis Ongie scored 24 for the Lakes.

On the girls schedule this evening…
• Houghton travels to L’Anse.
• Ontonagon hosts Bessemer.

• Hancock welcomes Ishpeming.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams advanced in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament yesterday…
• The top-seeded women took control early, and downed Davenport University 79-52. Ellie Mackay and Jordan Ludescher each scored 21 for the Huskies. Tech will face fourth-seed Saginaw Valley State University in the semifinals this afternoon at 5:00. Wisconsin-Parkside and Ashland meet in the other semifinal.
• The third-seeded men’s team dumped Purdue Northwest 74-63 last evening. Dawson Bilski led Tech with 26 points. The Huskies will face second-seed Grand Valley State University in the semifinals this evening at 8:30. Saginaw Valley State and Ashland play in the other semifinal.

College Hockey

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association wraps up its regular season this weekend.

19th-ranked Michigan Tech skates at fourth-ranked Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow in a series that was postponed from early January.

Northern concluded its regular schedule last week.

The Finlandia University hockey team fell to Lawrence University 4-1 last evening. Tyler Watungwa scored the Lions’ only goal. Ben Kelsch made 39 saves. Finlandia concludes its season at home against Lawrence tomorrow night. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team hosts Purdue Northwest today at 5:00 and tomorrow at 3:00.

The Northern volleyball team entertains Wisconsin-Parkside this weekend.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team has added a new recruit. Brandon Gaskin is a catcher from Katy, Texas.

College Softball

The Finlandia softball team has also added a new player. Natalia Cesari is a four-year varsity player from Ocean City, New Jersey.

College Football

Finlandia University has a new head football coach. Mike DuFrane comes from Saint Scholastica University, where he was defensive coordinator and strength coach. Before that, he was defensive and recruiting coordinator at Marietta College.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Carolina Panthers 5-2 last night. Filip Zadina scored both Detroit goals. Jonathan Bernier took the loss in net.

The Wings are off until Tuesday, when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons fell 114-104 to the New York Knicks last evening. With Jerami Grant and Josh Jackson still sidelined, Wayne Ellington led Detroit with 17 points. Mason Plumlee snared 13 rebounds.

Because of the all-star break, the Pistons won’t play again until they visit the Charlotte Hornets next Thursday.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers pounded the Toronto Blue Jays 8-2 yesterday in Grapefruit League play. Starter Spencer Turnbull gave up two runs on four hits over two innings.

The Tigers face the New York Yankees this afternoon.

In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Cleveland Indians 5-1 yesterday.

The Brewers play the Colorado Rockies this afternoon.

There are reports that the Brewers have signed free agent outfielder Jackie Bradley, Jr. It’s a two-year deal that gives Bradley the option to opt out after the first season.
