In high school hockey…
– Calumet lost both of its games to Detroit Jesuit Friday and Saturday by identical 6-1 scores.
– At the Sault Lions Showcase Saturday, Hancock lost 2-1 to Plymouth. The Bulldogs’ only goal was a late, empty-netter. Friday night, Hancock fell 5-3 to Birmingham Brother Rice, the top-ranked team in Division Two. Matt Sanregret scored twice, and Teddy Randell added a goal, as the Bulldogs outshot the Warriors 37-36.
– L’Anse defeated Medford 7-1 in the consolation match at the Merrill Tournament. The Purple Hornets fell to Sparta in the opening round on Friday.

In girls’ high school basketball Friday night…
– Calumet remained unbeaten, with a 43-32 victory over Baraga.
– Hancock slipped past Jeffers 48-46 in overtime.
– Houghton edged Westwood 47-44. Link to video highlights of the game here.
– L’Anse got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 40-38.
– Dollar Bay shut down Republic-Michigamme 38-9.
– Ontonagon defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 44-25.

On the boys’ schedule Friday night…
– L’Anse fell to Negaunee 61-34.
– Ewen-Trout Creek downed Watersmeet 60-30.

MTU Hockey Falls, Hoops Splits
The 11th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team split with seventh-rated Bowling Green over the weekend, falling 3-2 on Saturday, after earning a 4-3 victory Friday night. The Falcons took early leads in both games. On Saturday, Blake Pietila scored twice in a comeback attempt that fell short. On Friday, Brent Baltus tied the game eight minutes into the third period, and Tanner Kero’s goal about two minutes later was the game winner. Both Tech basketball teams earned victories over Grand Valley State Saturday. The women improved to 13-1 on the season, with a 61-52 win. The Huskies broke open a close game with a 13-4 run at the start of the second half. Morgan Anderson led MTU with 15 points.

The Tech men’s team also used a strong second half to defeat the Lakers 77-65.  Ben Stelzer scored 23 points, and Kyle Stankowski added 18 as the Huskies outscored GVSU by 15 in the second half. Tech hit 30 of 33 free throws in the game.

NMU Hockey Swept at Huntsville
The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost both of its games at Alabama-Huntsville… falling to the Chargers 3-2 Saturday night, and 2-1 on Friday.

The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 67-52 victory over Ferris State Saturday. The men’s team led the Bulldogs by a point with 90 seconds remaining, but FSU scored the final four points of the game to claim a 61-58 win.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team gave up two goals in the third period, and fell to Northland College 3-1 Friday night, Andrew Martin had tied the game with a short-handed goal for the Lions in the second period. The Lions will host Northland this afternoon at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia women’s team lost twice to St. Norbert College. The Lions fell 10-1 Saturday night. On Friday, Finlandia took an early lead on Lindsay Jackman’s first period goal, but St. Norbert College scored single goals in the second and third periods, and the Lions fell 2-1. In the two games, the Green Knights outshot the Lions 76-28.

GLHL – Wolverines Claim First Win
In Great Lakes Hockey League play Saturday night, Levi Erkkila’s goal 1:03 into overtime lifted the Calumet Wolverines to their first win of the season, 6-5 over the Fox Cities Ice Dogs. Calumet peppered Fox Cities’ goalie Drew Chaney with 56 shots.

On Friday, the Portage Lake Pioneers overcame an early deficit, and defeated the Ice Dogs 7-3.

NHL – Red Wings Beat Predators
Tomas Tatar scored twice, as the Red Wings defeated the Predators 5-2 Saturday night. Nashville came into the game with the best record in the league, but Detroit drove starting goalie Carter Hutton from the game by scoring three goals on the first four shots. Petr Mrazek made 34 saves for the Wings. Detroit hosts Buffalo tonight. If time allows, we’ll join that game in progress after NFL playoff football on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Detroit Pistons LogoNBA – Pistons Sink Sixers
The Pistons’ surge continued Saturday night with a 107-89 win over the 76ers. Six players scored in double figures for Detroit, led by Kyle Singler with 20. Andre Drummond snared 15 rebounds. The Pistons have won 10 of their last 12 games, and play at Atlanta in a Martin Luther King Day matinee on Monday. Tip-off is at 2:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NFL
The NFL Conference Championship games will be played today… the Packers at Seattle at 3:05, and the Colts at New England at 6:40. Hear both games, and the Super Bowl, on the voice of the NFL playoffs, AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
