High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Houghton recovered from a sluggish start, and blew out Novi 8-4. The game was tied 1-1 after the first period. The Wildcats took a brief lead but the second period ended the the teams tied 4-4. Houghton then exploded for four goals in the first 4:35 of the third period to take command. Jace Deforge had two goals and two assists. Jack Sayen scored twice. Connor Arko recorded a goal and three assists. Teegan Tapani, Jay Halonen and Gunner Flachs also scored, and Hudson Markham had three assists. Brycyn Nettell minded the net for the first two periods, and Cooper Flachs tok over for the third. The Huskies outshot the Wildcats 30-20.
- Calumet held off Brighton 2-1. Nate Londo and Ted Loukus gave the Copper Kings an early lead. Freddie Londo got one back for the Bulldogs late in the opening period, and the teams played scoreless hockey for the rest of the game. Beau Jukuri made 21 saves – 11 in the third period.
- Hancock fell to Capital City 3-2.
College Hockey
Logan Morrell’s goal 33 seconds into overtime gave the Michigan Tech hockey team a dramatic 4-3 victory over Holy Cross in the consolation match at the Coachella Valley Cactus Cup tournament in Palm Desert, California Saturday. Matthew Campbell, Blais Richartz and Stiven Sardarian scored during regulation. Sardarian also set up Morrell’s game-winner. Ryan Manzella stopped 22 shotes to earn the win in his first collegiate start.
The title game was equally dramatic, as Massachusetts-Lowell claimed a 3-2 victory over Nebraska-Omaha. All the scoring came in the third period.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team scored 24 points in the fourth quarter, and pulled away to a 68-60 victory at Davenport University Saturday. Isabella Lenz netted 17 points. With Tech’s lead at three, Alyssa Wypych sank a three-pointer with 34 seconds remaining, and Emma Anderson sank two free throws to seal the win.
The Tech men’s team dropped a 73-71 heartbreaker at Davenport Saturday. The Huskies were held to just four free throws over the first 12 minutes, but came back to take a two-point halftime lead. Marcus Tomashek’s steal and layup with four seconds remaining in the second half forced the extra stanza. Josh Terrian sank a three-pointer to tie the game with seven seconds remaining in overtime, but Jovan Tucker’s jumper at the buzzer gave the Panthers the win. Tomashek led the Huskies with 37 points.
The Northern Michigan University women’s team fell at top-ranked Grand Valley State 81-71 Saturday. Alyssa Nims scored 17, as the Wildcats suffered their first conference loss of the season.
The NMU men’s team defeated the Lakers 78-70 to earn their seventh-straight win. Dylan Kuehl scored 21.
Great Lakes Hockey League
The Calumet Wolverines shaded the M and M Shamrocks 5-4 in a shootout Saturday night. Logan Rastello and Sherman Mowery each scored twice in regulation.
NHL
The Red Wings won their fourth straight game Saturday night, 4-2 over the Jets. Dylan Larkin scored twice, Lucas Raymond had a goal and two assists, Alex DeBrincat netted the game-winner, and Alex Lyon made 21 saves.
The Wings host the Senators Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons dispatched the Timberwolves 119-105 Saturday evening. Cade Cunningham scored 40 for Detroit. Anthony Edwards netted 53 for Minnesota.
The Pistons have won six of their last seven, and welcome the Trailblazers tomorrow night. Coverage will start at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
NFL
In Saturday’s NFL games…
- The Ravens clinched the AFC North Division title with a 35-10 rout of the Browns.
- The Bengals shaded the Steelers 19-17. Pittsburgh clinches a wild card playoff berth despite the loss. Cincinnati will need some help from other teams today to reach the playoffs.
The Packers will tune up for the playoffs at home against the Bears in a 1:00 game today. The gametime temperatures is projected to be about 19 degrees. Receiver Romeo Doubs could miss the game because of illness.
The Lions will host the Vikings tonight. The winner will clinch the NFC North Division title, the top conference seed in the playoffs, and a bye in the opening round. The loser will fall to the fifth-seed position as a wildcard entry, and will open the playoffs next week on the road. Hear the broadcast of tonight’s game on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has activated linebacker Alex Anzalone and receiver/punt returner Kalif Raymond for tonight’s game. Raymond seems likely to play, after recovering from a foot injury. Anzalone’s status is up in the air, as he completes recovery from a broken arm.
The Vikings are trying to fill Ford Field with their own fans for tonight’s contest. The team has spent $2 million to purchase tickets on the secondary market, and has been offering them at discounted prices to Minnesota season ticket holders. NFL officials told Sports Illustrated, which broke the story, that there’s no rule preventing that.
