MTU Hockey Swept at Clarkson – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
Rapid River became the Upper Peninsula’s only state high school football champion yesterday, defeating Onekama 30-18 in the Eight-Player Division Two championship game at the Superior Dome. Morrice defeated Picfkford 44-16 in the Eight-Player Division One final. The Eleven-Player finals will be held next weekend. No U.P. teams remain in any of the divisions.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team fell to 0-7 on the season, with a 6-1 loss to Lake Forest College yesterday afternoon. Bella Abear scored the Lions’ only goal. Sarah Gundry made 41 saves, as the Lions were outshot 47-15.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team dropped an 8-1 decision to Wisconsin-Superior last evening. Bryce Mitzel netted the only goal for the Lions. Santeri Seppinen started in goal for Finlandia, and was replaced by Marcus Gloss. Each gave up four goals.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team is in Wooster, Ohio, for the Nan Nichols Classic this weekend. The Lions fell 79-69 to the host College of Wooster yesterday afternoon. Harlee Froberg led the Lions with 22 points. Katie Lundeen added 21. Finlandia will face Carnegie-Mellon today.

The men’s basketball team opened play at the Carthage Classic in Kenosha yesterday afternoon with an 85-75 loss to North Central University. Jacob Oom scored 21 points for Finlandia. The Lions will face the host team today.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 3-1 at Clarkson University for the second straight night, last night. The Golden Knights scored once in each period. Jake Lucchini netted Tech’s only goal early in the second period. Devin Kero made 22 saves for the Huskies.

The Northern Michigan University hockey squad completed a weekend sweep of Alaska-Anchorage with a 2-1 victory last night.

The MTU women’s basketball team will host Minnesota State this afternoon at 1:00 at the SDC.

The MTU men’s team is off this weekend.

The Northern Michigan University women’s hoops team will entertain Minnesota State-Moorhead today.

The NMU men’s team is also off this weekend.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings overcame a two-point deficit, and edged the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in overtime yesterday afternoon. Luke Glendening and Michael Rasmussen scored in regulation, and Dylan Larkin netted the game-winner in overtime. The Wings are off until Wednesday, when they host the Boston Bruins. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

Forward Darren Helm will likely miss some playing time, following an injury during yesterday’s game. Coach Jeff Blashill said Helm will “be out for some time,” but couldn’t quantify how long that will be. Helm left the ice with what appeared to be a right arm injury after a hard check into the boards. The team is describing it only as an “upper body injury.”

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will entertain the Cleveland Cavaliers tomorrow night.

NFL
The Detroit Lions host the Carolina Panthers in a 1:00 game today. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
