High School
In boys high school basketball action Friday night…
– Houghton dropped a 36-34 overtime heartbreaker to Escanaba.
– Hancock lost at Ontonagon 71-63.
– Chassell bested Calumet 58-42.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a 66-54 victory over Jeffers. Arthur Lyons scored 26 for the Lakes. Jaden Wood of the Jets led all scorers with 27.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City outscored Bessemer 72-54.
– Baraga fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 92-55. Jacob Witt scored 36 for the Panthers.
– L’Anse fell to West Iron County 59-52 in overtime. Dylan Harden led the Purple Hornets with 14 points.
In high school hockey…
– Calumet fell behind early, but came back to claim a 2-2 tie with Escanaba Friday night. Rory Anderson and Robert Erkkila scored for the Copper Kings, and Ian Carroll stopped 26 of 28 shots.
– Saturday afternoon, Alex Nordstrom’s goal with 4:46 remaining in the third period lifted Hancock to a 3-2 victory over Escanaba. The tally was Nordstrom’s second of the game. He also scored in the second period. Danny Hill found the net for the Bulldogs in the first period, and assisted on Nordstrom’s first goal. Teddy Randell had two assists. Dawson Kero stopped 16 of 18 shots to earn the win.
Kingsford won the Lake Superior Conference Tournament by defeating Negaunee 6-4 on Saturday. The result of the consolation match between L’Anse and Jeffers was not reported. In the opening round of the tournament on Friday, top-seeded Jeffers was stunned by fourth-seeded Negaunee 7-2. Third-seeded L’Anse lost to second-seeded Kingsford 4-3.
MTU
A night after the Michigan Tech hockey team was shut out 3-0 at Bemidji State, the Huskies turned the tables and roared to a 9-2 victory on Saturday. Eight different Tech players scored. Tyler Heinonen found the net twice. Joel L’Esperance had a goal and three assists, and C.J. Eick had three assists. Jamie Phillips stopped 27 of 29 shots in goal.
The MTU women’s basketball team gave Lake Superior State the first basket of the game – then ran off the next 11 points and never trailed again on the way to a 78-52 victory on Saturday. Danielle Blake and Kylie Moxley each scored 20 for the Huskies, who clinched a home berth in the quarterfinals of the upcoming GLIAC tournament. MTU remains tied with Saginaw Valley State for the North Division lead. Each team has one regular-season game remaining.
The Tech men’s team edged LSSU 91-87 on Saturday. All of the Huskies’ starters scored in double figures, led by Bryan Heath’s 18 points.
The MTU men’s tennis team defeated St. John’s-Minnesota 7-2 on Saturday, after falling 6-3 at St. Cloud State Friday night.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Alabama-Huntsville with a 3-1 victory Saturday night. The Wildcats blanked the Chargers 3-0 Friday night.
The NMU women’s basketball team lost to Northwood 55-49 Saturday. The men’s team held off the Timberwolves 73-70.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team dropped a 68-61 decision to Northland College Saturday. Mikayla Hakala led the Lions with 15 points.
The Finlandia men’s hoops team finished its season with an 83-75 victory over Northland. Four Lions scored in double figures, led by Jordan LaPlant, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds. The men conclude their season with a record of 8-15.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 5-1 at St. Scholastica Saturday, after falling 7-1 to the Saints Friday night. Sierra Meiners scored the Lions’ only Saturday goal. Finlandia wraps up its season with a game at Wisconsin-Superior this morning.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers opened up a 5-1 lead, then held on to edge the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 5-4 Saturday night. The result of the Pioneers’ game against the West Bend Bombers Friday night was not reported.
The Calumet Wolverines fell to the Bombers 10-4 Saturday night. On Friday, the Wolverines scored eight goals in the second period, and blew out the Ice Dogs 10-2. Eric Bausano had four goals and an assist. Jeff Erkkila had four assists. Ryan Patrick made 30 saves.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 3-2 in a shootout at Ottawa Saturday night. Andreas Athanasiou and Brad Richards scored for Detroit. Petr Mrazek stopped 27 shots. The Wings visit the Rangers tonight. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the New Orleand Pelicans this afternoon. Tip-off is at 3:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
