MTU Hockey Falls Late – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Houghton and Birmingham Brother Rice skated to a 2-2 tie.
– Calumet blanked Rochester Adams 2-0.
– Jeffers fell to Gaylord 6-5 at the DIII Challenge in Gaylord.

Today…
– Houghton entertains Rochester Adams. Pregame coverage begins around 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Hancock hosts Birmingham Brother Rice.
– Jeffers takes on Big Rapids at the DIII Challenge in Gaylord.

In high school girls basketball last night…
– Houghton lost at Negaunee 74-44. Kara Pietila scored 22 for the Gremlins.
– Hancock defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 61-32. Jordan Pertile scored 18 points for the Bulldogs. Bobbi Jo Caskey led the Blue Bolts with 13.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 61-37. Elise Besonen scored 20 for the Panthers. Laura Lyons led the Lakes with 10 points, and Erin Seppala added nine.
– Baraga lost to Ontonagon 45-40. Allison Durant paced the Vikings with 12 points. Ella Menigoz and Jenny Labyak each scored 12 for the Gladiators.

The Houghton boys swim team swept every event in their meet at Rudyard yesterday. The girls team took all but two events. The Gremlins swim at Sault Ste. Marie today.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s basketball team used a strong finish to get past Crown College 77-73 last night. The Lions trailed by 11 with less than nine minutes to go, but rallied to take the lead, and then hit five of six free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win. Dylan Underwood led Finlandia with 18 points. Brandon Robinette added 17. The Lions play at Wisconsin-Stout tomorrow.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 3-1 at 18th-ranked University of St. Thomas last night. Paul Lochner’s first-period goal gave the Lions an early lead. The Tommies broke through with two scores late in the second period, and added an insurance goal late in the third period. Matt Arnold made 47 saves, as the Lions were outshot 50-18. Finlandia skates at Wisconsin-Superior tonight.

The FinnU women’s basketball team plays at Adrian College tomorrow.

The Lions women’s hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to Concordia-Moorhead last night. Both Cobbers goals came in the second period. Annah Smiddy stopped 30 shots. The Lions face Concordia-Moorhead again today at noon at the Houghton County Arena.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team came back from a 3-1 deficit, but ultimately lost 4-3 to Ferris State last night. Jake Jackson’s goal late in the first period gave the Huskies a brief lead. The Bulldogs scored three times off Patrick Munson in the second period, before Munson was replaced with Robbie Beydoun. Scores by Justin Misiak and Brent Baltus tied the game in the third period, but Andrew Dorantes’ power play goal with five minutes remaining was the game-winner for Ferris. Those teams play again tonight at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

 

Both MTU basketball teams play at Purdue Northwest today.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with Bemidji State last night, and won the extra WCHA standings point in a shootout. Those teams face off again this evening in Bemidji.

Both NMU squads play at Grand Valley today.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines defeated the Marquette Mutineers 9-5 last night, in a game that was played Meadowbrook Arena in L’Anse. Mike Babcock and Logan Rastello each had hat tricks. L’Anse native Mike Turunen got the win in net. The Wolverines will host the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Fox Cities Ice Dogs last night was not reported. The Pioneers visit the Monroe Blues tonight.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost their fifth straight game last night, 102-98 to the Golden State Warriors. The Pistons nearly overcame a seven point deficit in the final minute, but couldn’t close out the comeback. Avery Bradley led Detroit with 25 points, and Andre Drummond collected 17 rebounds. The Pistons host the Boston Celtics tomorrow afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings entertain the St. Louis Blues this afternoon. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Tyler Bertuzzi will make his first appearance of the season for the Wings today. He was brought up from Grand Rapids to fill in for David Booth, who has been sidelined because of an unidentified injury or illness.

NFL
On Sunday, the Detroit Lions visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. The Green Bay Packers visit the Cleveland Browns for a 1:00 game.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers have signed veteran righthander Mike Fiers to a one-year, six-million-dollar deal. Fiers threw a no-hitter for the Astros after he was traded to Houston by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2015. He struggled last season, was left off the Astros’ post-season roster, and was non-tendered last week. Ironically, he was dropped from Houston’s starting rotation after the Astros traded for former Detroit ace Justin Verlander.
