MTU Hockey Falls in Marquette – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In hockey Saturday…
• Hancock downed Saginaw Heritage 5-2.
• Jeffers suffered its first loss of the season, 3-2 to University Liggett. Trayton Helminen and Benton Rajala scored for the Jets. Kasen Helminen made 26 saves.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team settled for a weekend split against Northern Michigan, falling 3-1 Saturday evening. Rylan Van Unen’s goal 23 seconds into the game was the first of three straight for the Wildcats. Ryland Mosley’s second-period tally accounted for the Huskies’ only score. Blake Pietila made 26 saves, as the Wildcats outshot the Huskies 29-19.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start, and fell to Wayne State 61-42 Saturday. The Warriors outscored the Huskies 18-4 in the first quarter. Sara Dax led Tech with 16 points.

The Tech men’s team used a strong second half to defeat Wayne State 84-77. After trailing by nine at halftime, the Huskies held the Warriors to just 29 points in the second half. Marcus Tomashek led MTU with 20 points, and Dawson Nordgaard added 19.

The Northern Michigan women’s team cruised past Saginaw Valley State 65-41 Saturday. Sarah Newcomer scored a career-best 23 points.

The NMU men’s team dispatched SVSU 71-56, powered by Dylan Kuehl’s career-high 30 points.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Marquette Mutineers 9-3 Saturday, in a game played at the Ontonagon Ice Rink.

The Calumet Wolverines lost at Eagle River 7-4 Saturday evening.

NHL

Patrick Kane scored his first goal as a Red Wing, but Detroit fell to the Senators 5-1 Saturday night. Alex Lyon gave up four goals over the first two periods, and was replaced in the third stanza by James Reimer.

Dylan Larkin was knocked unconscious after being punched in the back of the head by Senators forward Mathieu Joseph. As Larkin fell forward, he was cross-checked by Ottawa’s Parker Kelly. After lying motionless on the ice for several minutes, Larkin recovered enough to skate off the ice under his own power. His status for upcoming game has not yet been determined.

The Wings visit the Stars Monday. Because of NFL football, coverage will begin at 7:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons host the Pacers Monday.

NFL

The Lions visit the Bears in a 1:00 game today. Coverage starts at noon on 99.3 The Lift.

In tonight’s contest, the Cowboys entertain the Eagles. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

There are two Monday night games. The Packers face the Giants in New York. The Dolphins host the Titans in a contest that will be broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
