MTU Hockey Drops OT NCAA Heartbreaker – Saturday Sports Wrap

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team’s season ended with a narrow 4-3 overtime loss to Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA tournament yesterday. After a scoreless first period, Tech drew first blood with a Jake L’Esperance goal in the second stanza. The Fighting Irish quickly responded with two goals, and led 2-1 going into the third period. Gavin Gould’s tally in the opening minute of the third frame re-tied the contest. Notre Dame surged ahead a few minutes later, but Jake Jackson sent the game into overtime when he scored with about a minute remaining, and Tech goalie Patrick Munson on the bench in favor of an extra attacker. Jordan Gross scored the game-winner for the Irish in the 17th minute of the extra period. Munson made 28 saves in the loss.

Finlandia
For the second straight day, the Finlandia University baseball team split a doubleheader at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul yesterday. In the first game, Brandon Teichman threw a two hitter, as the Lions won, 2-1. FinnU dropped the nightcap 25-5.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers bowed out of the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament, with losses in both of their pool games yesterday. In their morning game, the Pioneers took an early lead, but eventually fell to the Mosinee Papermakers 5-4. Riley McKay scored twice and had one assist for Portage Lake, which built a 4-2 lead early in the third period, only to see Mosinee score three unanswered goals to win the game. The Pioneers were hurt when starting goalie Matt Turunen had to leave the game in the opening minute of the second period because of an injury.

In their second pool contest, the Pioneers lost to the Marquette Mutineers 14-2.  Joey Enright scored for times for Marquette.

The Calumet Wolverines began their pool schedule with a 10-2 victory over the Monroe Blues last night.Rory Anderson had a hat trick, and Matt Yeo and Alex Van Wagner each scored twice. Ryan Patrick made 31 saves. The Wolverines will conclude pool play today at 2:00 against the Fox Cities Ice Dogs. The semifinals will be played later today, and the championship match will face off Sunday at 1:00. Link to the tournament schedule and results here (note that the times listed are Central Time). NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Toronto against the Maple Leafs tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Chicago Bulls tonight.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers routed the Atlanta Braves 11-3 yesterday. Starter Daniel Norris gave up all three Atlanta runs over five innings. Former Tiger Aníbal Sánchez started for the Braves, and also allowed three runs in five innings. Detroit broke the game open with seven runs in the seventh inning. James McCann and prospects Alexi Amarista and Cam Gibson each drove in two runs. The Tigers face the Phildelphia Phillies this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost a 4-3 decision to the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Starter Brandon Woodruff gave up all four Chicago runs over five innings. The Brewers will face the Oakland Athletics today.
