MTU Hockey Drops Opener – Monday Sports Wrap

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team completed a stingy weekend with a 3-0 victory over Northland College yesterday afternoon. Junior Espino, Edward Caballero and Zach Wichman scored for the Lions.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to Northland yesterday.

MTU
The MTU soccer team settled for a 1-1 tie at Northwood University yesterday. Katri Studtmann scored the Huskies’ only goal

The MTU hockey team opened its season with a 3-2 loss to the University of Wisconsin in the annual U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game yesterday. The Badgers took command early, with two goals in the first period. Joel L’Esperance and Jake Lucchini scored power play goals in the second period, but the Huskies couldn’t complete the comeback. Patrick Munson stopped 24 shots, but took the loss in net.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers ended a disappointing season with a 5-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins yesterday. In what may have been his final start as a Tiger, Anibal Sanchez gave up three runs over five innings. Alex Presley homered.

The Tigers finished with a record of 64-98, tied with the San Francisco Giants for the worst record in the major leagues this season. Detroit will have the first pick in the 2018 amateur draft.

The Milwaukee Brewers scored four runs in the first inning, and wrapped up their season with a 6-1 victory over the Saint Louis Cardinals. Brett Phillips’ three-run homer was the big blow. Aaron Wilkerson pitched five perfect innings, and wound up allowing a run on two hits through seven frames.

The Brewers finished with a record of 86-76, in second place in the National League Central Division.

NFL
Ameer Abdullah rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown yesterday, as the Detroit Lions got past the Minnesota Vikings 14-7. Matt Prater kicked two field goals, as the Lions remained tied with the Packers for first place in the NFL North Division.

In last night’s game, the Seattle Seahawks overcame some key injuries, and defeated the Indianapolis Colts 46-18. In tonight’s NFL game, Washington plays at Kansas City. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings waived former Northern Michigan University goaltender Jared Coreau yesterday. If he’s not claimed by another team by noon today, he’ll be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Goalie Tom McCollum cleared waivers yesterday, and was assigned to Grand Rapids. As expected, Detroit assigned Michael Rasmussen to a junior hockey team. This year’s top draft choice led the Wings with four goals in the preseason. The Red Wings open the regular season at their new downtown Detroit arena Thursday against the Minnesota Wild. Hear the game on 99.3 The Lift.
