MTU Hockey Claims Rivalry Win – Sunday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey yesterday…
– Houghton took an early lead, and defeated Rochester 4-2. Nathan Erva had a goal and an assist for the Gremlins. Tucker Tapani, Seth Francois and Ty Halonen also scored. Matthew Ryynonen stopped 21 shots to earn his first win in goal for the Houghton varsity.
– Hancock dropped a 7-2 decision to Livonia Stevenson.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team fell 4-2 to Wisconsin-Superior yesterday. Kylee Dyni and Abby Kolek scored for the Lions, and Sarah Gundry made 54 saves to keep Finlandia in the game.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team, and both Lions basketball teams are off this weekend.

The Michigan Tech hockey team salvaged a split in its weekend series against Northern Michigan University with a 3-1 victory in front of a sellout crowd at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena last night. Seamus Donohue gave the Huskies an early lead, Justin Misiak scored the eventual game-winner late in the first period, and Trenton Bliss added an insurance tally midway through the second frame. Robbie Beydoun made his first start of the season in net, and turned in 28 saves.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams earned wins over Purdue Northwest yesterday. Cassidy Trotter scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out eight assists, as the women claimed a 79-54 victory. The men got 21 points from Bryan heath and 14 rebounds from Trent Bell in their 78-62 win.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams defeated Wisconsin-Parkside yesterday afternoon – the women 72-39, and the men 77-67.

GLHL
Logan Rastello scored four goals, as the Calumet Wolverines defeated the De Pere Deacons 6-3 last night. Rory Anderson and Davin Lehto also scored, and Ryan Patrick earned the win in net.

The Portage Lake Pioneers are off this weekend.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the New Orleans Pelicans this afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings couldn’t hold an early 2-0 lead, and lost 3-2 to the New York Islanders last night. Justin Abdelkader and Niklas Kronwall scored in the first period, but the Isles tallied three unanswered off Jonathan Bernier to claim the win. The Wings host the Los Angeles Kings tomorrow night. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, we will join the game in progress after high school basketball on Bear 102.3.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers host the Atlanta Falcons in a 1:00 game today. The Detroit Lions visit the Arizona Cardinals in a 4:25 contest. Hear that game on 99.3 The Lift.
