MTU Hockey Blasts Bemidji – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey yesterday…
– Hancock exploded for five goals in the third period, and defeated Traverse City Central 6-1.
– Houghton fell to Hartland 3-2. Seth Francois and Brendan Erickson scored for the Gremlins. Jimmy Pietila stopped 16 shots.
– Calumet lost 3-2 in overtime at Cranbrook Kingswood.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team dropped a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker at Marian University yesterday. Bella Abear scored for the Lions, and Annah Smiddy kept FinnU in the game with 43 saves.

The Lions men’s hockey team fell to Lawrence University 3-1 yesterday. Bryce Mitzel netted the Lions’ only goal. Marcus Gloss made 29 saves, as the Lions outshot the Vikings 37-29.

Both Finlandia basketball teams are off this weekend.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team overpowered Bemidji State 7-2 last night. Alex Smith and Dylan Steman each scored twice for the Huskies. Tommy Parrottino, Alec Broetzman, Thomas Beretta each found the net once. The Beavers didn’t score until the third period. Matt Jurusik made 26 saves.

The NMU hockey team had the weekend off.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to nail down a 78-68 victory over Northwood University yesterday. The Huskies saw a 12-point lead evaporate in the third quarter, but regrouped to outscore the Timberwolves by 10 points down the stretch. Abbie Botz led Tech with 21 points and nine rebounds.

A late surge by the MTU men’s team fell short, as they lost 75-70 at Northwood yesterday. Kyle Clow led Tech with 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Northern Michigan University women’s hoops team defeated Saginaw Valley State 66-52 yesterday. The Wildcats men’s team beat the Cardinals 67-59.

GLHL
Both the Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines were off this weekend.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons upended the Golden State Warriors 111-102 last evening. Blake Griffin scored 26 points, and Andre Drummond grabbed 19 rebounds. The Pistons have won five straight, and nine of their last 11, and will host the Oklahoma City Thunder tomorrow night.

NHL
Gustav Nyquist had a goal and two assists, as the Detroit Red Wings doubled up the Boston Bruins 4-2 last night. Tyler Bertuzzi, Dylan Larkin and Frans Nielsen also scored, and Jimmy Howard turned in 38 saves. The Wings entertain the Colorado Rockies tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

NFL
The Detroit Lions entertain the Los Angeles Rams in a 1:00 game this afternoon. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

The Green Bay Packers welcome the Arizona Cardinals in a 1:00 game today.
