MLB
The Minnesota Twins scored eight runs in the eighth inning, and pulled away from the Detroit Tigers 10-2 last night. The pivotal eighth inning began when Minnesota’s Joe Maur broke Detroit pitcher Alex Wilson’s leg with a leadoff line drive. Daniel Stumpf, Joe Jimenez and Blaine Hardy succeeded Wilson, and all gave up runs. The meltdown spoiled another good start by Matthew Boyd, who allowed two runs on four hits before leaving in the seventh inning.
The Tigers close their home schedule against the Twins today. Buck Farmer will pitch against José Berríos. Because of Lions football, pregame coverage will begin at 11:45 on KBear 102.3.
Along with Wilson, whose season is over, Miguel Cabrera left last night’s game with lower back tightness. The Tigers also said that outfielder Mikie Mahtook will not play again this year, because of a groin strain he aggravated Friday night.
Travis Shaw’s two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning powered the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Milwaukee forced the extra frame when Orlando Arcia homered in the bottom of the ninth. Chicago responded with a run off Jeremy Jeffress in the top of the 10th, but Shaw followed Ryan Braun’s double with his 31st home run of the season to give Milwaukee the win.
The Brewers conclude that home set against the Cubs this afternoon. Chase Anderson will start against Jose Quintana.
With seven games remaining, Milwaukee now trails Chicago by four and a half games in the National League Central Division, and is a half-game ahead of Saint Louis, after the Cardinals lost yesterday. Any combination of five Cubs wins or Brewers losses clinches the division title for Chicago.
