High School

In high school football on Saturday…

  • Lake Linden-Hubbell built a 30-8 halftime lead, and held off North Dickinson 46-32. The Lakes’ ground game carried the day, with Nate St. Onge rushing for 151 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, Josh Daavettila for 118 yards and four two-point conversions on 19 carries, and Brady Axford 113 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Lake Linden’s defense contributed with three interceptions – one each by Axford, Danny Mikus, and Daavettila, who returned his for a touchdown.

In high school volleyball Saturday…

  • At the Ashwaubenon Invitational Calumet split four matches, including a 2-1 (25-21, 23-25, 13-15) loss to Amherst, a 2-0 (23-25, 21-25) loss to Wrightstown, a 2-1 ( 25-23, 25-27, 15-9) win over Denmark, and a 2-0 ( 25-15, 25-21) victory over Fond du Lac. On the day, Maddie Torola recorded 39 kills, Allie Bjorn had 28, and Sienna Anderson had 10. Bella Coppo racked up 71 assists, and Jess Anderson had 35 digs.
  • At The Rock Invitational at Gladstone, Hancock defeated Gwinn 2-0 (25-12, 25-12), tied Florence 1-1 (16-25, 25-21) and lost to Forest Park 0-2 (17-25, 23-25).
  • Ten teams – Baraga, Ironwood, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Ontonagon, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, L’Anse, Stephenson, North Dickinson, Ishpeming and Chassell – competed at the Baraga Invitational Saturday. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City won the Division One title, defeating Ironwood 25 to 15 in the final. Ishpeming claimed the Division Two crown, outscoring Lake Linden-Hubbell 25-23. Members of the All-Tournament Team include Kiera Isaacson and Macy Jurgenson of the Blue Bolts, Audra Pawlak of the Red Devils, Brooklyn Dompier of the Purple Hornets, Raina Ledzian of the Nordics, and Sonja Kiviniemi of the Hematites.

In high school soccer, the Houghton boys soccer blanked Sault Area High School 5-0 Saturday. Caleb Wiitanen, Oliver Pap, Ethan Heckel, Roberto Marin and Josh Bennett each scored for the Gremlins. Jonah Falker had the shut-out in the net. 

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team stopped Hillsdale 21-6 Saturday. The Huskies scored first-half touchdowns on a one-yard run by Kolby Hindenach, and a 24-yard touchdown pass from Alex Fries to Darius Willis. Fries’ four-yard touchdown toss to Ethan Champney on the first play of the fourth quarter concluded the scoring. The Chargers’ only score was a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Fries completed 19 of 28 passes. 

The Northern football squad fell at Wisconsin-LaCrosse 35-21.

College Soccer

The Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team skunked Thomas More 3-0 Saturday.

The Northern women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Northwood.

College Volleyball

The UP North Tournament concluded at Michigan Tech Saturday… 

  • The Huskies dropped a tight 3-1 (18-25, 25-27, 25-21, 18-25) decision to 7th-ranked St. Cloud State. Meg Raabe had 17 kills.
  • Northern Michigan University stunned St. Cloud 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 15-13). Former Calumet standout Helen Beiring had 12 kills for the Wildcats.
  • Fourteenth-ranked Minnesota Duluth got past Findlay 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-22).

MLB

The Tigers fell to the Orioles 4-2 Saturday. Ty Madden took the loss, allowing one run over nearly four innings after taking over from opener Beau Brieske. Kenta Maeda gave up the other three runs in the seventh inning. Parker Meadows homered as Detroit scored both of their runs in the ninth.

The Tigers entertain the Orioles again today. Keider Montero will start against Cade Povich. Because of Lions football, there will be no Tigers broadcast today on 99.3 The Lift.

The Twins also lost, so Detroit remains two-and-a-half games behind Minnesota in the race for the final American League wild card playoff position, with 13 games remaining. 

Willy Adames hit two home runs, including a grand slam, as the Brewers blasted the Diamondbacks 15-8 Saturday evening. Milwaukee took command early, with a run in the first inning, and seven in the second. Garrett Mitchell and William Contreras also homered. Tobias Myers threw five shutout innings, but gave up two runs in the sixth, and two more before leaving in the seventh.

The Brewers visit the Diamondbacks again this afternoon. DL Hall will pitch against Zac Gallen.

The Cubs lost, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division expanded to 11 games. Any combination of three Brewers wins or Cubs losses clinches the division title.

NFL

The Lions host the Buccaneers in a 1:00 game today on 99.3 The Lift. Receiver Jameson Williams has been cleared to play, despite missing time this week with an ankle injury.

The Packers welcome the Colts for a 1:00 contest today. Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love is now listed as doubtful for the game. He did not practice this week, after injuring a knee in last week’s contest. Malik Willis will start if Love isn’t cleared, and Sean Clifford has been brought up from the practice squad as a backup.
