MTU Football Routed, Volleyball Wins – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball yesterday…
– Houghton at the Pulaski Invitational at Pulaski, Wisconsin – no report.
– Calumet at the Cadillac Invitational – no report
– Lake Linden-Hubbell finished second out of 10 teams at the Forest Park Invitational. The Lakes defeated Stephenson 2-0 (21-15 21-12) and Florence (21-9 21-12), dropped a close match to West Iron County 0-2 (18-21 19-21) and split with North Dickinson 1-1 (12-21 21-7) to win their pool with a 5-3 record. They dispatched the host Trojans in the semifinals 2-0 (21-19 21-11), then fell to to Iron Mountain in the finals 2-1 (21-18, 11-21 8-15). Erin Seppala led the Lakes with 29 kills, and added 30 digs for the day. Maija Codere had 28 kills, and Joslyn Perala had a team-high 49 digs.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team concluded the Wisconsin-River Falls tournament with losses to Saint Olaf 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-10), and Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-7). Jesse Diaz had five digs in the first match, and 14 in the second, and moved into third place on the Lions’ all-time list.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team snapped its 23-game losing streak with a 1-1 tie against Mount Mary University yesterday.  Jennifer Hernandez scored the Lions’ goal off a pass from Kelsi McDermid. Haley Makela made 10 saves.

The men’s soccer team fell 2-1 to Maranatha Baptist yesterday afternoon. Patrick Miles’ header off a pass from Osvaldo Cruz gave the Lions an early lead, but the Sabrecats scored twice in a seven-minute span in the second half to take the game.

MTU
The Tech volleyball team swept Saginaw Valley State 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-17) yesterday. Olivia Ghormley had 12 kills, and Anna Joynas recorded nine digs.

The Huskies football team suffered a lopsided 42-7 loss to Grand Valley State yesterday. Tech opened up a brief lead on an eight-yard first quarter touchdown run by John Williams. The Lakers then scored six straight touchdowns to finish the game. Quarterback Jake Brown struggled, completing just 10 of 27 passes for 73 yards, with two interceptions.

The Michigan Tech soccer team will entertain Saginaw Valley State today at noon.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team lost 42-10 at Ferris State last evening.

MLB
Myles Jaye gave up six runs over the first two innings, as the Detroit Tigers fell to the Chicago White Sox 10-4 last night. The Sox collected 17 hits against Jaye and four relievers.

The Tigers entertain the White Sox again this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against Dylan Covey. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Miami Marlins jumped on Zach Davies for four runs in the first inning, and two more in the third, and went on to a 7-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. Ryan Braun and Travis Shaw homered in the losing effort. Those teams play again today in Milwaukee. Brandon Woodruff will start against Dillon Peters.

The Cubs defeated the Cardinals again yesterday, so Milwaukee now trails Chicago by four games in the National League Central Division. Saint Louis is five games back.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers play at Atlanta tonight. The Detroit Lions visit the New York Giants tomorrow evening.
