MTU Football, Hockey Fall – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school football Friday Saturday, – Ontonagon defeated Superior Central 46-12.

In high school volleyball, Houghton won its own invitational Saturday, beating Calumet 2-1 in the title match. The Gremlins reached the finals by blanking Gwinn 2-0, while the Copper Kings dispatched Marquette 2-0.

Team_CC_LogoThe Team Copper Country U18 hockey squad advanced to the championship game of the Midget AA Split Season State Playoffs by defeating the Romeo Dawgs 6-5 in a shootout Saturday. Reid Pietila, Ed Beiring, Cole Jepson, Dawson McKay and Teddy Randell scored in regulation. Cory Tourtilott and Ed Beiring scored in the shootout, Ian Carroll saved five of six in the shootout for the Team CC win. The championship game will be played in Chelsea this afternoon. Their opponent will be determined this morning.

MTU
The 16th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team lost 3-2 at Ferris State Saturday night. Malcolm Gould scored both Tech goals, and Jamie Phillips stopped 29 shots.

The ninth-ranked MTU football team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 38-21 at Grand Valley State Saturday night. The Lakers scored 17 unanswered points in the second quarter to put the game away. David Walter set a school record with 15 receptions. Brandon Cowie completed a career-best 32 of 44 passes for 323 yards. Link to video highlights from the game here.

The MTU soccer team plays at Ferris State today.

The Huskies volleyball team wrapped up play at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover in Aurora, Illinois, with a 3-0 (11-25, 23-25, 21-25) loss to Wisconsin Parkside on Saturday.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team gave up two late touchdowns, and lost at Wayne State 34-31 Saturday afternoon.

The Northern Michigan hockey team lost 4-0 at Lake Superior State Saturday night.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University football team lost 62-0 at Buffalo State Saturday afternoon. The Lions offense was held to just 24 yards, including -32 rushing.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team defeated Robert Morris-Springfield 6-0 Saturday. The Lions play at Fontbonne University this afternoon. The women’s soccer team visits Alverno College this afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-1 at Montreal Saturday night. Petr Mrazek stopped 37 shots in net. The Wings skate at Edmonton Wednesday night. Faceoff is at 9:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons continue their exhibition season this afternoon at San Antonio.

MLB
The Kansas City Royals took a two games to none lead in the American League Championship series with a 6-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday. Game three of that best-of-seven set will be played Monday in Toronto.

The New York Mets drew first blood in the National League Championship Series with a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs Saturday. Game two of that set will be played tonight in New York.

NFL
In the NFL today, the winless Detroit Lions host the Chicago Bears at 1:00. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The unbeaten Green Bay Packers entertain the San Diego Chargers in a late-afternoon game.

LSPR
David Higgins and Craig Drew completed a perfect Rally America season, as they took the title at the Lake Superior Performance Rally Saturday. Higgins and Drew won all but two of the stages to complete the first undefeated season since 1987. They finished nearly two minutes ahead of the local team of Adam Yeoman and Jordan Schulze.
