MTU Football Claims Epic 4-OT Win – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Houghton got past Jeffers 3-2 (24-26, 25-23, 24-26, 25-18, 15-13) in an incredibly tight match. For the Gremlins, Chloe Serafin had14 kills, 8 blocks and 21 digs, Sophie Hebert had 11 kills, Laney Johnson had 41 assists and 31 digs, and Emmy Pietila had 41 digs. Mia Nordstrom led the Jets with 20 kills and 4 blocks. Kloe Verran had 40 digs, and Liz Halonen had 20 assists. 
  • Ewen-Trout Creek swept Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-19). Kiera Isaacson had 8 kills and 20 digs for the Blue Bolts, and Macy Jurgenson had 8 assists.
  • L’Anse stopped Westwood 3-0.

In cross country, Houghton swept its own Bill Fezzy Memorial Invitational yesterday..,

  • The boys earned a narrow team win over Jeffers. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was third, followed by Ironwood, Gogebic and Hancock. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta took first place individually. Birk Seagren and Benjamin Hemmer of the Gremlins placed second and third, and Cameron Anderson and Landon Larson of the Jets placed fourth and fifth.
  • The girls easily outpaced Hancock, with all five Gremlin runners placing in the top-12. Ewen-Trout Creek was third, followed by Calumet, Ironwood, Chassell and Gogebic. Tessa Rautiola of the Gremlins took individual honors, with Roman Trevino Peterlin third, Sela Niska fourth, and Lily Ross fifth. Ella Keranen was Hancock’s top finisher, in sixth place.

  • Calumet travels to Westwood. Coverage will start at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • Hancock journeys to Menominee.
  • L’Anse plays at West Iron County.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell travels to Munising.
  • Ontonagon plays at Rapid River.

The Hancock softball team will hold a returnables drive tomorrow between 9 and noon. Bring your donations to Hancock Bottling, on Birch Street near the Driving Park.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team outlasted the South Dakota Mines 52-50 in an epic four overtime game last night. In the longest game the Huskies have ever played, Alex Fries passed for a school record 471 yards and five touchdowns. Ethan Champney caught 10 of those passes for 277 yards. The Hardrockers jumped out to an early 21-0 lead, but the game was tied 35-35 at the end of regulation. Each team scored touchdowns with extra-point kicks in the first overtime, then added touchdowns with two-point conversions in the second. Neither team scored in the third, as the overtime scenario shifted to alternating two-point conversion plays. After Fries connected with Champney in the fourth overtime, Hunter Buechel deflected a South Dakota Mines pass in the endzone to seal the win.

The Northern Michigan football squad lost at Kentucky Wesleyan 33-13

College Soccer

The MTU soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 victory at Saint Cloud State last night. Reilly Lovercheck scored, and Bri Barrows got the win in goal.

The Huskies play at Minnesota Duluth tomorrow.

The NMU men’s soccer team shaded Northwood 1-0 yesterday.

The Northern women’s soccer team buried Minnesota-Duluth 6-1 last night.

The women’s team plays at Saint Cloud State tomorrow.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team is in Golden, Colorado, for the Oredigger Classic. They’ll face Regis this afternoon, and Gennon this evening. Tomorrow, they’ll take on Colorado Mesa and the Colorado School of Mines.

The Northern volleyball squad is at the Minnesota State tournament at Mankato. They’ll play Minnesota State Moorhead this morning, and Truman State this evening. Tomorrow, they’ll take on Upper Iowa and Minnesota State.

MLB

Parker Meadows’ two-out, full count grand slam in the top of the ninth gave the Tigers a 4-3 victory over the Padres last night.

The Tigers visit the Athletics tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Mitch Spence. Because of Packers football on 99.3 The Lift, we’ll join the Tigers game after Calumet High School football on KBear 102.3.

The Brewers took yesterday off, and will host the Rockies tonight. Frankie Montas will pitch against Ryan Feltner.

NFL

In last night’s NFL opener, the Chiefs outlasted the Ravens 27-20.

The Packers begin their NFL season with an unusual Friday night game tonight against the Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions kick off their campaign Sunday night at home against the Rams. Kickoff is at 8:20 on 99.3 The Lift.
