MTU, FinnU Football Fall – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school football yesterday, Ontonagon defeated Carney-Nadeau 38-16.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team edged Mount Mary University 3-2 (25-15, 27-29, 22-25, 25-10, 15-8) in Milwaukee yesterday afternoon. Kaisa Holmstrom had 16 kills and 16 digs, Shannon Anderson had 16 kills and 14 digs, and Marina Dalton had 15 kills. Nicole Anderson had a career-high 52 assists, and Jessie Diaz tied her own school single-match record of 37 digs .

The Finlandia football team opened play in the MIAA with a 72-7 loss at Olivet College yesterday afternoon. The Lions’ only score came in the third quarter, when Eric Kostreva broke loose for a 38-yard touchdown run. The Comets outgained the Lions 560-123 in total offense.

MTU
For the second time two days, the Michigan Tech volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit. The Huskies pulled out a tense 3-2 (18-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 17-15) victory against Ashland yesterday. Olivia Ghormley again led the Huskies with 25 kills. Megan Utlak had 27 digs.

The MTU soccer team will play a non-conference match at Northern Michigan University today.

Defenses ruled the day, as the Tech football team lost 10-0 to Saginaw Valley State yesterday. The Huskies reached the red zone twice, but couldn’t push into the endzone. Quarterback Will Ark completed 19 of 46 passes for 152 yards, and threw three interceptions.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team couldn’t hold a 13-point halftime lead, and lost 31-30 in overtime at Davenport University yesterday afternoon. The Panthers scored a touchdown on the first play of overtime, and kicked the extra point. The Wildcat responded with a touchdown on their overtime possession, but failed on a two-point conversion attempt that would have won the game.

MLB
For the second day in a row, the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Detroit Tigers 6-5 last night. Christian Yelich’s long home run off Daniel Stumpf in the seventh inning – his second of the contest – was the game-winner. Yelich is within striking distance of a Triple Crown. He leads the National League with a .324 batting average, and is tied with the Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter with 36 home runs. His 109 RBIs are two short of league leader Javier Baez of the Cubs.

The Cubs lost to the Cardinals 2-1, so Milwaukee and Chicago are now tied for first place in the National League Central Division, with one game left in the regular season. The Cubs face the Cardinals today. The Brewers host the Tigers. Spencer Turnbull will pitch for Detroit, and Gio Gonzalez will counter for Milwaukee. NHL
The Detroit Red Wings wrapped up their NHL preseason schedule last night, with a 5-1 rout of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jonathan Bernier made 25 saves, in a game in which few of Detroit’s veterans played. Prospect Matt Puempel had a goal and an assist. The Wings open the regular season Thursday at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 7:05 on KBear 102.3.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers host the Buffalo Bills in a 1:00 game today. The Detroit Lions visit the Dallas Cowboys in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

Baltimore plays at Pittsburgh in tonight’s NFL contest, which will also be broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
