MTU, Finlandia V’Ball Each Get First Wins – Sunday Sports Wrap

David PriceTigers Fall to Giants Again
David Price gave up four runs in the first inning, and the Tigers lost again to the Giants, 5-4 yesterday. Price settled down, and gave up just one more run before leaving the game with two outs in the ninth. Detroit came back on the strength of two Miguel Cabrera home runs, but couldn’t close the gap.

The Tigers host the Giants again tonight. Kyle Lobstein will start against Tim Hudson. Hear the first pitch at 8:00 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.

Kansas City also lost yesterday, so the Tigers continue to trail the Royals by two games in the American League Central Division. They are a game-and-a-half behind in the race for the second wild card spot.

Brewers Fall to Cardinals
The Brewers dropped a 5-3 decision to the Cardinals yesterday. Kyle Lohse struggled. The Brewers matched the two runs he gave up in the top of the first inning by scoring two of their own in the bottom of the first. They couldn’t match the three Lohse gave up in the fourth inning.

The Brewers host the Cardinals again this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will start against Adam Wainwright.

Milwaukee now trails Saint Louis by four games the National League Central Division, and and is tied for the second wild card spot.

Lions Prep for Season Opener
The Lions host the Giants tomorrow night. We’ll join the game after Tigers baseball on FM 99.3 and AM 1400 WCCY.

MTU V’Ball Splits at Keweenaw Classic
The MTU volleyball team won just one of its five matches at the Keweenaw Classic. On Saturday, the Huskies lost to Winona State and Minnesota-Duluth by identical 3-0 scores. The split Friday’s matches, defeating Bemidji State 3-1, and losing to Upper Iowa 3-2. The Huskies opened the Classic with a 3-1 loss to Wisconsin-Parkside Thursday night.

The MTU women’s soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 loss to Winona State on Friday. Jenna Proctor scored the Huskies’ only goal, off a pass from Janelle Riedl. The Huskies will host Saint Cloud State today at noon.

The MTU women’s tennis team lost at Grand Valley State 7-2 on Saturday, and plays at Ferris State this morning.

NMU Football Falls to Northwood
After playing to a halftime tie, the Northern Michigan University football team opened its season with a 23-13 loss to Northwood Saturday night. Northwood’s offense held the ball for more than 41 minutes.

Finlandia University
Finlandia LionsAt the Ashland Invitational on Saturday, the Finlandia volleyball team lost to Rockford University 3-0,  then earned its first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Northland. On Friday, the Lions lost 3-0 to Concordia-Chicago, and 3-0 to Maranatha Baptist.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team lost 3-1 at the Moody Bible Institute Saturday, and plays at the Illinois Institute of Technology tomorrow. The women’s team gave up six goals in the second half, and lost to Minnesota-Crookston 8-0 Saturday.
