High School
In high school boys basketball…
- Jeffers lost at Ishpeming 80-41.
At the first MTU Showcase yesterday, with teams from the Copper Mountain Conference taking on teams from the Skyline Conference at the SDC.
- The Lake Linden-Hubbell girls defeated Norway 57-46.
- The Lake Linden Hubbell boys fell to Stephenson 49-38.
- The Baraga boys lost to North Central 42-39.
- The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City boys fell to Forest Park 67-49.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team shaded Northern Michigan 4-3 in overtime in the consolation game at the Great Lakes Invitational yesterday. Tech took an early lead, with goals by Matthew Campbell, Jack Works and Marcus Pederson. The Wildcats scored two third-period goals to force extra time. Not much extra time was needed – Logan Morrell’s goal just 20 seconds in gave the Huskies the win. Stiven Sardarian had three assists for Tech. . Derek Mullahy started in goal for the Huskies and made seven saves in the first period. Ryan Manzella earned his first collegiate victory in his first NCAA game by stopping 15 shots over the final two periods.
Top-ranked Michigan State dispatched fourth-ranked Western Michigan 3-1 to win the title game. The Spartans scored two third-period goals to break a 1-1 tie, and earn their first GLI championship since 2009.
MSU goaltender Luca Di Pasquo allowed just one goal over both games, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The All-Tournament team included forwards Alex Bump of Western Michigan, and Isaac Howard and Joey Larson from Michigan State. Michigan Tech’s Matthew Campbell and Western’s Samuel Sjolund were named the top defenders.
NBA

NHL
The Red Wings host the Penguins tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NFL
In last night’s NFL contest, the Lions scored 18 points in the third quarter, and outlasted the 49ers 40-34. Jared Goff passed for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 117 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown run with three minutes remaining that sealed the win. Jake Bates missed two extra points, but also kicked two field goals, and set a new Detroit single-season scoring record. The Lions improve to 14-2, and will face the 14-2 Vikings Sunday night. The winner of that game will claim the NFC North Division title, and the top seed in the playoffs.
