Morning Sports for Wednesday, May 7th:
MLB: Ray Wins Debut, as Tigers Pound Astros
Robbie Ray worked out of a first inning jam… then cruised into the sixth inning, as the Tigers beat the Astros 11-4. In his first major-league start, Ray gave up five hits, and struck out five. He left after the Astros scored their first run with one out in the sixth. Houstons other three runs came off Justin Miller in the ninth. Detroit’s hitting onslaught started early… when Miguel Cabrera homered in the first inning. He finished with four of the Tigers’ 18 hits.
Ray is tentatively schedule to start again for Anibal Sanchez on Sunday against the Twins. Sanchez threw his first bullpen session yesterday, as he recovers from a finger laceration. He’s eligible to return on Monday… but the Tigers probably won’t need him to make a start until as late as May 20th.
The Tigers have won seven in a row… and continue their home series against the Astros tonight. Rick Porcello will face Brad Peacock. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Brewers Score Early; Fall Late
The Diamondbacks scored three runs of Ian Kintzler in the eighth inning, and came from behind to beat the Brewers 7-5. All five Milwaukee runs came in the first inning. The Brewers wrap up that set against the Diamondbacks this afternoon. Wily Peralta will start against Bronson Arroyo.
