Morning Sports for Thursday, May 1st:
MLB: Tigers Sweep White Sox
Max Scherzer scattered four hits over six shutout innings, as the Tigers beat the White Sox 5-1 yesterday afternoon. Scherzer struck out seven, as he earned his third straight win. Chicago fill-in starter Hector Noesi cruised through the first three innings… but Detroit broke through for four runs in the fourth. Bryan Holaday’s two-run double was the big blow in the inning. The White Sox’ only run came off Evan Reed in the ninth. The Tigers have today off, and open a series at Kansas City tomorrow night. Rick Porcello will face James Shields. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.
The Tigers finish the first month of the season with a record of 14-8… in first place in the American League Central… 1.5 games ahead of the Royals.
The Tigers have announced that Robbie Ray will come up from Toledo to start Tuesday’s game. He’ll fill in for Anibal Sanchez… who’s on the disabled list with a blister on his pitching hand. Ray was one of the players obtained from the Nationals in the Doug Fister trade. At Toledo, he hasn’t allowed a run in his last 16 innings. Fister, by the way, has not played yet this season for Washington. He’s on the disabled list with elbow inflammation… and hopes to make his debut next week.
Brewers Fall to Cardinals
The understaffed Brewers finally ran out of gas yesterday… and lost to the Cardinals 9-3. Playing without starters Ryan Braun, Jean Segura and Aramis Ramirez, Milwaukee saw starter Matt Garza give up a run in the first, and three in the third. Garza left the game after bruising his thumb while batting in the top of the fourth. The Brewers open a series at Cincinnati tonight. Marco Estrada will start against Homer Bailey.
Segura and Ramirez are expected to be in the lineup for tonight’s game. Segura actually played a bit late in last night’s contest. Milwaukee may also make a roster move today to get a fresh arm for the bullpen. Relievers combined to throw 275 pitches in the three games against the Cardinals. Backup catcher Martin Maldonado was pressed into service to pitch the ninth inning yesterday.
The Brewers won 20 games in April. They have the best record in baseball, and lead the Cardinals by 5.5 games in the National League Central.
