Morning Sports for Thursday, May 15th:

MLB: Tigers Outlast Orioles
The Orioles tagged Justin Verlander for five runs yesterday… but the Tigers still pulled out a 7-5 victory. All of Baltimore’s runs came in the fifth inning… on two RBI singles, and a three-run homer by Nelson Cruz. That tied the game… but Rajai Davis put Detroit back on top with a homer in the sixth. After completing their sweep against the Orioles, the Tigers have today off, and open a series at Boston tomorrow night. Max Scherzer will face Jon Lester. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Brewers Fall to Bucs in Ninth
The Pirates scored three runs in the ninth, and beat Brewers 4-1 last night. Francisco Rodriguez took the loss… which spoiled a solid seven-inning start by Wily Peralta. The Brewers wrap up that set against the Pirates this afternoon. Yovani Gallardo will pitch against Wandy Rodriguez.

Milwaukee pitcher Tom Gorzelanny has begun a rehab assignment with the team’s single-A Brevard County affiliate. Gorzelanny is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

Brewers’ center fielder Carlos Gomez has dropped his appeal of a three-game suspension for his part in a brawl with the Pirates last month. Gomez is on the bench with an achy back… and figured he might as well do the time while he’d be out, anyway.

Van Gundy Intro Planned for Today
Stan Van Gundy will be introduced today as the Detroit Pistons’ new head coach and director of basketball operations. Reports say he’ll make 35-million dollars over five years. Van Gundy has previously coached the Heat and the Magic… and also coached the 2005 and 2010 Eastern Conference All-Star teams. He’ll have full control of personnel decisions. Van Gundy is expected to hire a general manager to run day-to-day operations. The fate of interim coach John Loyer is not clear. His contract runs through next season… so he may remain with the team as an assistant.

Packers Sign Draftees
The Packers have signed two of their selections from last week’s NFL Draft.  Fifth-round receiver Jared Abbrederis and seventh-round receiver Jeff Janis have come to terms.

Finlandia Adds Volleyballer
Finlandia University will welcome a new player to the volleyball team this coming season. Emma Nelson made the varsity team at Oasis High School in Cape Coral, Florida as an eighth-grader. She was a five-year captain, and a two-time All-State Honorable Mention.
