MLB: Tigers Rocked by Rangers
Rick Porcello’s six-game winning streak game to a rude end Saturday, as the Tigers fell to the Rangers 12-2. Porcello was tagged for eight runs before leaving the game in the sixth inning. Texas batters collected 19 hits in the game. Infielder Danny Worth wound up pitching the ninth inning – his second mound appearance in less than a week. He gave up a run on three hits.
The Tigers host the Rangers again this afternoon. Justin Verlander will face Colby Lewis. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Marlins Shut Down Brewers
Wily Peralta was solid over six innings, but Jacob Turner was better, and the Brewers fell to the Marlins 2-1 on Saturday. The former Tigers’ prospect gave up eight hits over six and a third innings… but kept the Brewers off the board. He earned his first win since last July. The Brewers play at Miami again this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will make his first start of the season for Milwaukee. He’s filling in for Yovani Gallardo, who’s nursing a sprained ankle. Former Brewer Randy Wolf will make his first major league start since 2012 for the Marlins.
The Brewers sent infielder Jeff Bianchi to Nashville to make room for Nelson on the roster.
Lane is Track All-American
Michigan Tech runner Jani Lane finished seventh in Saturday’s championship race in the 1500 meter run at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Lane turned in the second-best time in school history. The finish made him the fourth All-American in Huskies’ history. Don Gleneski (shot put) in 1987, Chris Klaes (3,000 steeplechase) in 1990 and Justin Blake (hammer) in 2005 were the other Tech track and field All-Americans.
Finlandia Hockey Adds Forward, Goalie
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team has added two players to next season’s roster. Walker Ensted is from Omaha. He had a 9-4 record in goal for the Marquette Royales last season, with a 3.67 goals-allowed average.Taylor Cox is from Pittsburgh, and can play all three forward positions. He may be best known for an incident in 2012 when he scored a goal for the New Jersey Titans of the Eastern Hockey League… and celebrated by jumping up against one of the glass panels at the edge of the rink. The panel shattered, and he fell through. Video of the crash was featured on SportsCenter. You can see it here.
